“A wine that arouses great emotions, as great is the love and care with which it was created.”

In 1974, Giuseppe Mori, father of current owner Alessandro,  fell in love with the medieval village of Montalcino, in the province of Siena where the Mori are originally from. In particular, he was enamored with an ancient turret from the mid-1200s in which they used to dry a particular type of chestnut (hence the name), so he purchased the small farm. From this vantage point you can overlook the city of Siena and the entire Val d'Orcia.

Giuseppe's sons, Andrea and Alessandro, accompany their father in this adventure and although they continue to follow in his footsteps in the legal profession, they dedicate themselves to the vineyard every weekend. From the first vintage vinified in 1976, to the first bottled in 1980, to today, the history of Marroneto and that of Alessandro go hand in hand. Each vintage not only represents a rainy summer or a windy and harsh winter, but is also the indelible trace of his life.

“Every single aspect must be addressed (in the vineyard) with the utmost attention, it cannot be corrected in the cellar.” The Marroneto vineyards are arranged so that each plant has 3.6 square meters available. The management of the vineyard, then, is based on a traditional and minimalist philosophy that borrows practices and systems used with respect for the plants, treating the vines as little as possible and avoiding intensive production.

"Alessandro Mori of Il Marroneto has gone from strength to strength from vintage to vintage. As for the 2019 Brunello, the most difficult thing will be to keep our hands off of it long enough to give it the time it needs to mature. Very much in Il Marroneto style, this wine is already showing beautifully with vividly ripe fruits and sweet spices, all on a framework of pure elegance. For all of its upfront appeal, waiting is absolutely recommended. The 2019 Madonna delle Grazie remains a wine of meditation, yet with an energy about it that is seldom seen. I’ve tasted this from cask multiple times and bottle in Italy and the United States. The last bottle was left open for two days and only got better." - Eric Guido, Vinous Media

To arrive at Il Marroneto, an almost impossibly steep street is to be followed. The estate is on the northern flank of Montalcino, lying over a Jurassic soil; one of the oldest in Italy. In the cellar, an old botte grande is slowly gurgling, mumbling, bubbling. The fermentation here is natural, malolactic included, all in oak. Madonna delle Grazie – Brunello from a single vineyard beside the estate – rests in large oak casks for 42 months. ‘For us, the oak is conceived just to store the wine,’ says Iacopo Mori, the second generation, today in charge. This 2019 is sleek and fresh on the nose, with red currants and dark cherry, and a graceful depth of incense and smoky woodland, sweet violet, cinnamon and orange peel. Vibrancy dominates the palate, with long, fierce acidity and thick, velvety tannins leading to a sweet, persistent aftertaste.-Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter

For lovers of this estate, you’re going to want to stop everything and go find the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Madonna Delle Grazie if you have the means. There’s simply nothing else like it, and it needs to be experienced. It pours a saturated, youthful ruby color and has an unmistakable and distinctive nose that is highly expressive, with layered aromas jumping from the glass and unfolding notes of cassis, wildflowers, orange marmalade, clove, and blackberries. (Words do this no justice.) Equally potent and layered on the palate, it continues seamlessly, with noble structure and profound concentration through a stunning and long finish that lasts for several minutes (or as long as I could give it until moving on). Remarkable and singular, it truly stands apart from the crowd, even in this phenomenal vintage, where it’s hard to do much wrong. Profound. It’s a showstopper now and will be one of the great wines of the region for decades. Drink 2028-2050.-Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck

Iacopo Mori described the 2019 vintage as ‘perfect, no disease...lots of fantastic grapes,’ when he visited Decanter in December 2023. Indeed, 2019 is looking superb across the board. Il Marroneto's Brunello di Montalcino 2019 has the most incredible scent; an enticing waft of aromatic cherry and fragrant violets. In the mouth it's supremely precise, with a silky texture and sweet red fruits. Intense, chiselled and sapid, there's a bewitching pureness and delicacy here. Delicious.- James Button, Decanter

Alessandro Mori's wines are easy to spot in a blind tasting thanks to the soaring intensity and vibrant Sangiovese aromas they display. They are truly one of a kind. A wine that sees a relatively short and hot fermentation, the Il Marroneto 2019 Brunello di Montalcino respects local winemaking tradition and remains true in spirit. The steep verticality of the bouquet evokes almost-carbonic or lifted aromas of bright cherry, strawberry shortcake, lilac and heritage rose. You get straight to the heart of Sangiovese. The tannins are extremely fine and powdery and the freshness of the fruit is beautifully intact. This wine really pops in 2019.-Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
