Château Lafon-Rochet is one of the oldest estates in Saint-Estéphe dating back to 1650 and was classified as a Fourth Growth in the Official Classification of 1855. In 1959 it was purchased by the Tesserons, owners of Pontet Canet, who completely renovated the property and in doing so dramatically improved the quality of the wine. Today it is owned by the Lorenzetti family whose stable of chateaux includes D’Issan, Pedesclaux and Lilian Ladouys. The 41-hectare vineyard of Lafon Rochet is planted to 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc and recent vintages have shown very well, representing excellent quality to price ratio.

The 2020 Lafon-Rochet represents the essence of classicism in Bordeaux. Medium in body and finely-cut, Lafon-Rochet is one of the classiest, more refined Saint-Estèphes readers will come across. Dark fruit, earthiness, lavender, licorice, menthol and cloves add nuance, but it is the wine's balance and vibrancy that impress most. Give the tannins a few years to melt away. Showing the pretty, elegant style of the vintage, the 2020 Château Lafon-Rochet exbibits a ruby/purple hue to go with a perfumed bouquet of ripe black cherries, spring flowers, graphite, and violets. 2020 Tour Saint Christophe (Saint-Emilion)

The 2020 Château Tour Saint Christophe showed spectacularly well, and based off past vintages, this shouldn't surprise anyone. Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc raised in 40% new barrels (the balance is in second- and third-fill oak), it offers a full-bodied, incredibly pure, balanced style revealing subtle oak, terrific darker, almost blue fruits, lots of chocolate, leafy herb and mineral nuances, and gorgeous tannins. It's worth pointing out that this will be the last vintage made by the talented Jérôme Aguirre. This terrific Saint-Emilion will evolve for two decades. - Jeb Dunnuck
