Still in foudre working through the last few grams of sugar when I tasted it in July 2022, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes showcases bold black-cherry fruit that virtually knocked this taster's head backwards. It's full-bodied on the palate, building in intensity and complexity on the lengthy finish, where notes of raspberries, star anise and garrigue merge seamlessly into the wine's supple, velvety texture. - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate
A fine fragrance; tea leaves, plum and floral flourishes. A fine palate too, showing exceptional tannic finesse, expressive fruit, and lovely acidity. Well balanced, elegant and drinkable. Strong ruby colour, purple reflections, broad brightening on the rim. Delicate hints of candied violets, black wild berries, some lavender, a touch of dried herbs and lime zest. Taut, finely-meshed, with depth. Ripe cherries, exquisite fruit, ripe, supporting tannins, fresh and mineral. Has great length; a perfect marriage of the different soils and varieties, certain ageing potential.-Falstaff
Not terribly dark in the glass, but this has real power and concentration yet no heaviness. It's very well judged, not too much, no over-extraction, just a really classic Châteauneuf imprint that's balanced and charming without being forced or exaggerated.
