2016 Volnay Magic
d'Angerville / Joseph Drouhin / Xavier Monnot
Small Quantities - All Wines In Stock
Sometimes referred to as an "iron fist in a velvet glove,â Volnay produces smooth-structured, perfumed wines of surprising longevity. Fans of the appellation appreciate its delicacy and aromatics that lend a feminine nature to the wines, while there are more heavyweight and robust examples from certain terroirs as well.
2016 d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru
89-92 VM / 89-91 WA / 89-92 BH
Very dark color. Lively aromas of blueberry and violet. Juicy and intense, with very ripe, sweet dark berry and chocolate flavors framed and enlivened by brisk acidity and saline minerality. This wine includes the Volnay Clos des Angles fruit, since production in this premier cru parcel was too small to make a separate cuvée. Stephen Tanzer . - Vinous Media
2016 d'Angerville Volnay Champans 1er Cru
92-95 VM / 93+ WA / 91-94 BH
(the entire bottom of this vineyard was fried by frost, according to régisseur François Duvivier): Bright, dark red-ruby. Medicinal blueberry and licorice aromas are lifted by a minty high note; less showy and more restrained on the nose than the Taillepieds and Caillerets today. Then wonderfully dense, primary and pure on the palate, but more vertical and less opulent than the Taillepieds and Caillerets. Strong mineral energy accentuates the impression of vibrancy. A bit less open to inspection today owing to its firm tannic spine. Stephen Tanzer. â Vinous Media
2016 d'Angerville Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru
92-94 VM / 92+ WA / 91-93 BH
Bright ruby. Blackberry, licorice and violet on the perfumed nose. Fine-grained and suave, but with terrific inner-mouth floral lift giving the middle palate a sense of energy. The wine's finishing sweetness is leavened by saline minerality and noteworthy grip. Really spreads out to saturate the mouth; an outstanding example of this premier cru. - Stephen Tanzer
2016 Joseph Drouhin Volnay Clos des Chenes 1er Cru
92 DE
The Clos des Chênes is lovely this year, offering up an incipiently complex bouquet of ripe wild berries, violets, raw cocoa and squab. On the palate the wine is medium-full, taut and chalky, with superb energy and good concentration. It's an elegant, minerally rendition of Clos des Chênes. - William Kelley, Decanter
2016 Xavier Monnot Volnay Clos des Chenes 1er Cru
93 WS / 91 WA
Intense aromas of black cherry, pomegranate and tamarind mark this juicy red. Smooth, with well-integrated tannins lending a dusty feel as the finish plays out. Already harmonious, this should develop well over the next two decades. Best from 2022 through 2036. 375 cases made, 175 cases imported. - BS, Wine Spectator
