We are delighted to offer two 2020 Saint-Juliens that have been created through the vision of Henri Martin, who pieced together the estates of Château Gloria (94-95pts) and Château Saint-Pierre (95-96pts). Henri Martin, grandson of a cellar-master at Château Gruaud-Larose and son of a cooper from the village of Beychevelle, had a remarkable vision - to create a new chateau in Saint-Julien, by buying up parcels and rows of vines from the other cru classé properties across the appellation - something never done before. The result was Château Gloria, which he created between the 1930s and the 1970s. He then added Château Saint-Pierre to his portfolio. The properties are still run by the family. Gloria isn't a cru classé itself, simply because it didn't exist in the 1855 classification, but it is appreciated as much for its superb quality as for its pleasing prices. The 2020 is delicious, a very classic Saint-Julien with lovely balance!

Founded in the 17th Century, Château Saint-Pierre, a 4th Grand Cru Classé, was broken up and scattered as a result of several inheritances. In 1982, through a combination of luck and persistence, Henri Martin managed to re-form the estate as it was known in 1855. Saint-Pierre and Gloria vie with each other from vintage to vintage.

Also out today is the "impressive" 94-95pt Pauillac, Haut-Batailley. Located to the south-west of the appellation bordering the Saint-Julien AOC, its vines stretch over 22 hectares of deep Garonne gravel soils. The Cazes family, who also owns Lynch Bages and Ormes de Pez, acquired the property in March 2017 and have high ambitions for the estate.

Finally, from the village of Saint-Estèphe, the "wow"-worthy 95-96pt Phélan Ségur has proudly overlooked the Gironde estuary since the early 19th century. Founded by Irishman Bernard Phelan, the estate was developed by his son, Frank, and renamed Phélan Ségur in the early 20th century. Consisting of seventy hectares of vines divided into four distinct parts, the great diversity of the terroir accounts for Phélan Ségur’s complexity.

2020 Gloria (Saint Julien)
94-95 JS / 93-95 JD / 92-95 VM / 92-94 WA / 92 DE

The 2020 Gloria has an intense nose of penetrating blackberry, raspberry, crushed violet and crushed stone aromas. After 20 minutes, this just blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine acidity and just a touch of espresso and orange peel toward the finish, which remains taught and focused. What a wonderful Gloria! This might actually surpass its sibling, Château St. Pierre, this year. - Neal Martin, Vinous Media

2020 Saint Pierre (Saint Julien)
95-96 JS / 94-96 JD  / 94-96 WA / 93-95 VM

Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 Saint-Pierre bursts with baked blackberries, stewed plums and cassis, followed by hints of dried mint, chocolate box and tapenade with a waft of pencil lead. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly styled with impressive freshness and ripe, fine-grained tannins supporting the energetic black fruits, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note. The blend is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, aging for around 14 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. The alcohol is 13.3%. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

2020 Haut Batailley (Pauillac)

94-95 JS / 92-94 JD / 92-94 WA / 92-94 VM / 93 DE

The 2020 Haut-Batailley was opened for a good hour before I commenced penning my note. This will be matured for 14 months in 60% new oak. It gently unfolds in the glass to reveal blackberry, faint sea spray scents (a whiff of the old Gironde estuary) and just a touch of crushed stone. This is well defined though not powerful. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins on the entry that frame the bright blackberry and raspberry fruit. This Pauillac conveys superb energy, especially toward the Japanese nori-infused finish, awakening and revivifying the senses. It is a classically sculpted and very harmonious Haut-Batailley that will give 25–30 years of drinking pleasure, but should be cellared for 5–6 years. - Neal Martin, Vinous Media

2020 Phelan Segur (Saint Estephe)

95-96 JS / 94-96 JD / 93-95 VM / 94 DE / 90-92+ WA

Getting a legit "wow" in the notes, the 2020 Château Phélan Ségur looks to be another incredible wine from the team of Véronique Dausse. A blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon 42% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it's a deep, almost inky-hued barrel sample offering gorgeous notes of crème de cassis, blueberries, damp earth, crushed violets, and graphite. With full-bodied richness, a round, layered texture, serious concentration, and building structure, this is the real deal and up with the gems in Sainte-Estèphe. While some wines show a softer, more forward style, this is firm, mineral-laced, and structured, and is going to reward a good decade of cellaring. The alcohol checks in at 13.5% with a pH of 3.7 and a whopping 88 for an IPT. - Jeb Dunnuck
