Today sees the release of one of our wines of the vintage from a Pessac Leognan property that has been “firing on all cylinders” of late, Chateau Les Carmes Haut Brion. Located right in Pessac (across from Haut Brion), the property changed hands in 2011 and has undergone extensive upgrades including a massive renovation of the winemaking facilities and an expansion of vineyard holdings. It has been farmed Organically since 2009 and has the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc on the Left Bank, at around 45% of plantings, with the rest 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, set across two gravel, clay and sandy soil slopes. The wine is now better than ever.

A little later than expected, but most welcome, we are thrilled to offer one of the top wines of the vintage from Saint-Julien, the 2021 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. The Château owes its name to its "beautiful pebbles" (beaux cailloux in French) that geologists refer to less romantically as Gunzian gravel. These quartz pebbles were deposited by the ancient Garonne some two million years ago, and force the vines to send their roots deep to find nutrients. Belonging to just six families since 1720, this quintessential St-Julien 2nd Growth estate falls firmly in the camp of the Super Seconds. The Ducru was already super when our tasting team visited the chateau in April, elegant and so balanced, with wonderful dark fruit. At 98% it is the highest ever proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, and it carries this off perfectly!

We are also delighted to offer an outstanding St. Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classe property that has been on an amazing run of form over the last decade, Château Beausejour Duffau that's "An exceptional wine from this estate in 2021."

Also out today is the ever popular Pessac Leognan property, Chateau Pape Clement, with its "juicy and delicious" rouge and a blanc that "is certainly in the running for the white of the vintage." Both wines are regarded as some of the very best in Bordeaux.

Last but not least is Château Clinet, a small Pomerol property that has leapt to prominence in the last 30 years and now produces one of the most sought-after wines in the region. The 9-hectare vineyard is on top of one of the finest plateaux in Pomerol and is planted with Merlot (80%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) and Cabernet Franc (10%).

GVWM Wine of the Vintage

Technical Director Olivier Pouthier crafted one of the wines of the vintage at Les Carmes Haut-Brion. The 2021 possesses mind-blowing intensity and stunning persistence. Bright red-fleshed fruit, blood orange, mint, dried flowers and exotic spice caress the senses as the 2021 shows off its sheer allure. I don't think I have ever tasted a young Carmes with this level of precision. The blend is 40% Cabernet Franc, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, aged in 70% new oak, 20% new foudres and 10% in amphora. As always, Les Carmes sees some whole cluster, 45% in 2021, an unusual technique in Bordeaux, but one that works so well here. The 2021 is a magical wine. That's all there is to it. - Antonio Gallino, Vinous Media

2021 Ducru Beaucaillou (Saint Julien)

96-98 VM / 96-97 JS / 95-97 JD / 96 DE / 94-96 WA / 92-94+ WI

The 2021 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a pretty significant departure from the past, as it is nearly pure Cabernet Sauvignon. A deep, aristocratic wine, the 2021 possesses remarkable intensity from start to finish. Inky dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate and leather are some of the myriad nuances that develop with some aeration. The 2021 is so well balanced. The 100% new oak, often quite dominant in Ducru en primeur, is so well integrated, likely because lower alcohol extracted less oak imprint. The 2021 is a drop dead gorgeous wine, and a Ducru for the ages. Superb - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

95-96 JS / 95 DE / 93-95+ WA / 93-95+ JD / 92-95 VM / 94 JA / 92-94 WI

The 2021 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) shows considerable promise. Bursting with aromas of inky berry fruit and plums mingled with notions of violets, rose petals and burning embers, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and sensual, with a rich core of fruit, lively acids and beautifully refined tannins, concluding with a long, mineral finish. The first vintage made by Joséphine Duffau Lagarrosse since she took back control of the family estate, the 2021 is a blend of 73% Merlot and 27% Cabernet Franc—the highest percentage of Cabernet since the early 2000s (when some Cabernet Sauvignon was included in the blend too). - William Kelley, Wine Advocate

2021 Pape Clement Rouge (Pessac Leognan)
95-96 JS / 92-95 VM / 91-94 WA / 94 DE / 93 JA / 91-93 JD

Pape made a very finely crafted and elegant wine this vintage, with plenty of berry, spice and earth character. Hazelnuts, too. Medium-bodied, savory and lightly spicy on the finish. Creamy tannins. Really fine, with lovely length. - James Suckling

2021 Pape Clement Blanc (Pessac Leognan)

96-97 JS / 95-97 JD / 92-95 VM / 94 DE / 93-94 WA / 92-94 WI

The 2021 Château Pape Clément Blanc is certainly in the running for the white of the vintage. Based on 70% Sauvignon and 30% Semillon brought up in just 18% new oak, it has bright, racy acidity that's beautifully balanced by a rock-solid core of fruit and mid-palate density. Giving up notes of pineapple, tart peach, white chocolate, and ample minerality, it will warrant 2-4 years of bottle age, but it's impressive anyway you look at it. - Jeb Dunnuck

2021 Clinet (Pomerol)

93-96 JD / 95 DE / 93-95 WA / 94 JA / 93-94 JS / 92-94 VM

An exceptional Clinet in 2021. Richly scented, dark and roguish, a touch of sour cherry and perfume to the nose. Round, supple, generous and vibrant on the palate - this has a lifeforce to it with nuance of red berry flavour and real persistency as well as juicy acidity. I love the upfront nature of this and the really quite vivid and expressive red fruits while the background gives the savoury, menthol, liquorice notes offering depth and wideness - lots of terroir and grape markers in the glass - particularly the high percentage (25%) of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. Tannins are firm and supportive with the overall freshness lifting the frame, delivering a full mouthfeel with a density of tannins and black fruit that doesn't dip. Well worked and presented. A touch of wood on the finish but subtle and supportive. You also get the florality all the way through which is just so appealing. Supremely well worked, charming but also confident - I absolutely love it and it clearly stood out every time tasting it - four times in total. 45,000 bottles made, same production as 2020. - Georgina Hindle, Decanter
