After a busy week chock full of big releases, today was no exception with a pair of our wines of the vintage in Figeac and La Conseillante, perrenial favorite Pavie Macquin, and wines from the Guinaudeau family of Lafleur in Pomerol.

Château Figeac is one of the leading St-Emilion estates and its wine, with its high Cabernet content, has often been described as the most Médoc-like in St-Emilion. Since 2010 Figeac has been managed by Comte Eric d’Aramon and his wife Laure. It is located in the north-west of the appellation with its vineyards adjoining those of Cheval Blanc. Figeac has been on an incredible run of form over recent years. and the wines are now on par with the very best in the appellation.

La Conseillante's 13 hectares of vineyards are located on a plateau in eastern Pomerol on the boundary with the St-Emilion appellation. Its vineyards border those of L'Evangile, Vieux Château Certan and Cheval Blanc. This is Marielle Cazeau’s sixth year at La Conseillante, having arrived at the estate in 2015 from just over the fence, so to speak, as former winemaker for Petit Village. The chateau is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2021 with a commemorative bottle and special OWC.

One of the highlights of visiting Bordeaux to taste en primeur each year is visiting Nicolas Thienpont at Chateau Pavie Macquin to taste through his exquisite lineup. A neighbor of both Pavie and Troplong-Mondot, Pavie-Macquin is now one of the most consistently great wines in the appellation. It was founded by Albert Macquin in the 1880s, the man who is widely credited for saving Saint-Émilion by perfecting the grafting technique that put an end to the phylloxera pandemic. He was an expert on soil types and vine varietals, and built up the estate through many small acquisitions which is still owned by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The wines are still not that widely known, but loved by those who have discovered them. Under the care of Thienpont and consulting winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt, the wines have reached new heights offering remarkable quality for the price, especially when compared to other similarly-rated Bordeaux that sell for much more!

Last but not certainly not least, we're pleased to offer several wines from the Lafleur stable in Pomerol. While the grand vin is one of the most coveted wines in the world, their other bottlings from Pomerol as well as their vineyards in Fronsac are well worth considering.

Lovely aromatics right off the bat, good spice, white peppers, touches of savoury cassis. This 71% mix of the two Cabernets is the highest ever at Figeac, and you feel it in this savoury, rosebud, leafy character to the palate, brilliantly handled and one of the wines of the vintage. This delivers careful balance, sculpted fruits, with a juicy finish. 100% new oak. Romain Jean-Pierre technical director. 38hl/h yield, harvest September 21 to October 19 (with a three week gap between Merlot and Cabernet). 3.65ph. The 2021 La Conseillante was picked the latest in memory, from September 28 until October 8, at 39hL/ha, and matured in 70% new oak. It comes in at 13.3% alcohol and a pH of 3.6. The beautifully defined bouquet offers blackberry, bilberry and light iris petal scents, just a suggestion of black truffle coming though with time. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and lightly spiced red fruit. There is a very subtle ferrous note, lovely depth and grip on the finish, and a persistent aftertaste. A beautiful La Conseillante courtesy of winemaker Marielle Cazaux and her team. - Neal Martin, Vinous Media

2021 Pavie Macquin (Saint Emilion)

GVWM Over-Achiever & Standout Mid-Range Wine

94-95 JS / 95 DE / 93-95 WA / 93-95 JD / 94 JA / 92-94+ WI / 92-94 VM

Tasted on multiple occasions, the 2021 Château Pavie Macquin is a more forward, textured, charming wine from this estate that still has plenty of classic Pavie Macquin class, freshness, and minerality, which is the hallmark of this terroir. Coming from a cooler site just above Château Pavie, the 2021 is a blend of 79% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, from a selection of 80% of the production. Harvest here started on the 4th of October for the Merlot and finished on the 19th of October for the Cabernet, and the wine spent 30-35 days on skins in a mix of open top wood and concrete tanks and is currently resting in 50% new French oak barrels. Its deep purple hue is followed by terrific aromatics of blue fruits, violets, and chalky minerality, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, ripe, rounded tannins, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. This cuvée always needs bottle age, but I suspect this will be one of the more approachable vintages for this wine. - Jeb Dunnuck

2021 Pensees De Lafleur (Pomerol)
94-96 WA / 95 DE / 94-95 JS / 93-95 JD / 93 JA / 91-93 VM

Smoked earth and iron touches with iris and rose perfume on the nose alongside sweet spices and tobacco. This is an exceptional wine giving sublime enjoyment and appeal. Gentle, soft and delicate yet also juicy and succulent with mouthfilling acidity - really lifted and bright. This has enjoyable roundness but no overt heaviness, it’s so refined with concentrated strawberry and red cherry brightness. Still quite taut, more on the subtle side, with a slow dedication and persistent drive. It’s certainly not shouting but carefully showing it's layered complexity, refinement and general deliciousness. Tannins are so fine, barely even noticeable giving a subtle frame and structure. Just before the finish it becomes more round and spherical with the wet stone, the graphite and density appearing on the palate. Like all wines in the Lafleur stable this year, they expand slowly but surely. -Geogina Hindle, Decanter.
