The 2021 en primeur campaign enters a new phase this morning, with the release of the legendary First Growth, Château Lafite-Rothschild. Lafite has been on an amazing run of form in recent years, and they have produced one of the finest 2021s of the Left Bank, which is being compared to the Lafites of the nineties, and in particular to the 1996. Château Lafite-Rothschild is seen by many as the first of the First Growth Bordeaux. It was purchased in 1865 by Baron James de Rothschild, the head of the French branch of the Rothschild family, who passed away just three months after purchasing Lafite. The estate was inherited by his three sons: Alphonse, Gustave and Edmond, and so began a dynasty that continues to this day, with Lafite remaining at the pinnacle of the Bordeaux wine elite. Treated by many as a blue-chip commodity, Lafite is an unbelievable good wine to drink, more than worthy of its lofty status - no-one will ever forget the first, or the last, time that they had the pleasure of drinking it! Allocations are always very tight for Lafite and as always we are expecting very high demand with limited quantity available.
Alongside their release of Lafite, Domaines Barons de Rothschild have released their leading Pomerol wine, Château L'Evangile. This is is one of the most prestigious estates in Pomerol and produces one of the most sought-after wines in the appellation. It is located in the far east of Pomerol and its vineyards border those of La Conseillante, Gazin and Cheval Blanc. L'Evangile has always been a top-class estate but quality has been pushed noticeably higher since Domaines Baron de Rothschild of Château Lafite acquired a majority shareholding in 1990. Since then, while the vineyards have seen only mild improvement and expansion, remaining planted to Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc, the winemaking has been improved dramatically. The wines are now genuinely challenging Pétrus and Lafleur in terms of quality.
Finally, from Saint-Emilion, today sees the release of Château Troplong Mondot. Château Troplong Mondot has changed hands many times since it was built in the mid seventeen hundreds, but really came to the fore under the guidance of the late Christine Valette. Under new ownership since 2017, manager Aymeric de Gironde and winemaker Thomas Duclos have made some significant changes, opting to pick earlier and extract less, in order to retain tension, elegance and vibrancy in the wine.

2021 Lafite Rothschild (Pauillac)
GVWM Wine of the Vintage
97-98 JS / 97 DE / 97 JA / 95-97 WA /95-97 VM / 94-96+ JD / 94-96 WI
A brilliant wine that shares some similarities with the formidable 1996, the 2021 Lafite Rothschild wafts from the glass with inviting aromas of dark berries, cigar box, loamy soil, black truffle and violets. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's rich and concentrated, with beautifully powdery tannins, lively acids and a long, saline finish. Of course, this isn't as dramatic as the 2020 or 2019 out of the gates, but the 2021 is a brilliant success in its own right. What's more, its structure and balance mean that it is likely to prove almost immortal. It's a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, which is one of the all-time highest percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon chez Lafite. - William Kelley - Wine Advocate

2021 L'Evangile (Pomerol)
GVWM Wine of the Vintage
96-97 JS / 94-96 VM / 93-95 WA / 93-95 JD / 94 JA / 94 DE
The 2021 L'Évangile was picked September 21 to October 4, and matured in 50% new oak and 15% in clay amphora. It registers 14.0% alcohol and a pH of 3.65. This is very different and, unsurprisingly, far superior on the nose of black cherries, black truffle, crushed stone and a touch of orange peel; very focused and very Pomerol. The palate is medium-bodied, cohesive and elegant with supple tannins and fine acidity, yet there is real depth and a sense of nascent energy toward the finish. The young Cabernet Franc on gravel soils from the Chantecaille lieu-dit absolutely defines this 2021. A great success for this reenergized estate. - Neal Martin, Vinous Media

2021 Troplong Mondot (Saint Emilion)
95-97 VM / 96 DE / 95-96 JS / 93-96 WA / 95 JA
The 2021 Troplong Mondot is shockingly raw and untamed, but in the very best sense of those terms. A wine of energy and pure power, the 2021 is going to need a number of years to be at its best, but it is certainly very impressive in the early going. The 2021 clocks in at 13.5%, which has not been seen here since the 1990s. The 2021 is not an easy wine to taste at this stage, as it is not fully formed. I won't be surprised if the 2021 turns out even better than this note suggests. It is a dazzling wine by any measure, and a far cry from the wines of decade ago, when the malolactic fermentations were often not finished when en primeur samples were presented! Superb. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
