"As the winemaker says, 'a return to our youth'. Long. And with the usual Mugnier delicacy."
- Jancis Robinson

Burgundy's largest Monopole is a true clos surrounded by four walls measuring just under 10 hectares. Mugnier produces both red and white Burgundy from the clos. The Marechale vineyard lies more accurately in the Primeaux area of Nuits which is home to Arlot's Clos de Forets, and Liger Belair's Clos des Grandes Vignes. The history of Clos de la Marechale is a little mysterious, but evidence suggests that the land has some historical connection to Marey-Monge, and the vineyard today is pretty well the geography that it has been since the 1830s. Although 2021 is probably one of the smallest vintages of recent past, I like the wines for their transparency, elegance and a return to classic style. - Ron van Vlaardingen, Burgundy Buyer and Fine Wine Sales Director

Mugnier’s nearly ten-hectare monopole at the southern extreme of Prémeaux-Prissey has suffered in recent years: hail in 2018, coulure in 2019, drought in 2020, and frost in 2021. It has produced a bit more than half a normal harvest this year, but what is left is lovely indeed, with lush, pretty aromas of raspberry with floral notes and a delicate, supple texture on the palate that is ethereal yet oddly persistent. It is far from the most structured in the portfolio but is among the most approachable.—Charles Curtis MW, Decanter

A light to medium purple. Mugnier elegance meets the Maréchale, so this is more in fruit than flowers after the ethereal Chambolle. There is enough depth of fruit here, both on the nose and palate, followed by a fresh finish, fruit plus acidity with also a light tannin or two. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: November 2022.—Japer Morris, Inside Burgundy

Transparent garnet. Delicate, well-balanced nose. Sweet and yet with lots of detail. Lots to explore here with, as the winemaker says, 'a return to our youth'. Long. And with the usual Mugnier delicacy.—Jancis Robinson

The 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is more overtly structured from bottle than I perceived from barrel, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries, vine smoke and earthy spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, taut and chalky palate that will reward some patience.—William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

This too is elegant and pure if slightly more deeply pitched with its aromas of both red and dark currant laced with freshly turned earth. Once again there is excellent verve and detail to the medium weight flavors that also possess an appealing texture if not quite the same finesse on the bitter pit fruit and youthfully austere finale that is slightly more structured.—Allen Meadows, Burghound
