The much fêted 2022 Bordeaux en primeur has begun, and first of the big guns out of the blocks is the completely entrancing Château Cheval Blanc, one of our wines of the vintage.
In a vintage where many of the top wines were a delight to taste from barrel, Cheval Blanc really did stand out, and made it onto our shortlist of really exceptional wines. Situated on the St Emilion and Pomerol border, Cheval Blanc has long been one of the most sought after wines in the world and the great vintages can provide drinking experiences like no other. When Cheval is on form, there really is nothing quite like it, and there can be little doubt that the 2022 will join the pantheon of fabled vintages from this superb property. As you can imagine, stock is extremely limited...don't miss this great vintage of Cheval in the making!
Also available from St Emilion today is a potentially-perfect and "ultimately over-delivering" 2022 Angelus with "super fine-grained, silt-like tannins, finishing long and achingly shimmery." Along with the grand vin is the "fresh and vivid" 94-95pt 2nd wine, Carillon d'Angelus, that we were very impressed with and put on our Over-Achievers and Standout Mid-Range lists for the vintage.
Additonal releases of interest are noted below - don't miss this opportunity to secure your stock at the opening prices.
As always, our 2022 Futures Landing Page is updated with the new releases each day, and includes our Wines of the Vintage, Standout Mid-Range Wines, Over-Achievers and Value Drinkers. "This is the 40th year I have tasted barrel samples in Bordeaux, but I have never come across anything like the 2022 vintage. It was one of the hottest and driest growing seasons in the history of France’s most famous wine region, yet it produced thousands of opulent and structured but still fresh and balanced wines. They are exciting...it was a joyous and fascinating experience to taste so many special wines. And there was high quality from top to bottom. The 2022 vintage really is something unique." - James Suckling
2022 Cheval Blanc (Saint Emilion)
GVWM Wine of the Vintage
99-100 JS / 98-100 WI / 98-100 VM / 98-100 JA / 97-99 WA
The 2022 Cheval Blanc is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Deep, seamless and striking in its beauty, the 2022 possesses pedigree to burn. Readers will find a sumptuous wine, but there’s plenty of tannin lurking beneath all of that intensity. In fact, the 2022 is the most tannic Cheval since 2010. The aromatics are surprisingly vibrant for a wine from a warm, dry year. The wine's energy is palpable. The 100% new oak is not all perceptible, which is another sign of top-notch balance. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of exotic Franc notes, followed by blood orange, red fruit, mind and dried herb touches. The 2022 includes 17% press wine (compared to the 11% or so that is typical), but as I have noted in my comments elsewhere in this report, the press lots were of high quality in 2022 because the winemaking was gentle. Once again, Cheval Blanc represents a pinnacle of excellence. Readers should note there is no Petit Cheval in 2022. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2022 Angelus (Saint Emilion)
98-100 WI / 98-99 JS / 96-98 WA / 97 JA
This estate's shift in the direction of gentler extraction and more reductive, less overtly oaky élevage continues, and this extreme vintage only underlines that. Fermented at cool temperatures (20 to 23 degrees Celsius), and with an increasing proportion of the wine's Cabernet Franc component matured in large wooden foudres, the 2022 Angélus wafts from the glass with deep aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with hints of iris, licorice and pencil lead. Full-bodied, deep and seamless, with a layered core of cool, vibrant fruit, powdery tannins and a long, saline finish, it's a brilliant young wine in the making. The 2022 is a blend of 53% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. - William Kelley, Wine Advocate

2022 Carillon d'Angelus (Saint Emilion)
GVWM Standout Mid-Range Wine & Over-Achiever
94-95 JS / 94 JA / 92-94 WI / 91-93 WA / 91-93 VM
Vivid ruby red fruits, smoked caramel and mint leaf underline the personality and definition of this wine, setting it apart from Château Angélus in a way that has been increasingly apparent over recent vintages, reflecting its separate vineayrds, and clearly different blending. Has a luscious quality without being overdone, with concentrated sage and rosemary spice. 60% new oak, 18ha dedicated plots, Harvest September 6 to 28. Just over 10% of the Château Bellevue plots are now in Carillon (so around 0.5ha), and the vinification saw double the usual time for cold soaking at no more than 2C to keep focus on fruit, never going over 22C during the fermentation itself. - Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux.
