With the pace of the campaign now picking up, it is time for one of the "gems in the vintage," the Pauillac 2nd Growth, Château Pichon-Lalande. Once all part of the Pichon-Longueville estate, the property was split in 1850 by the then Baron, with his sons inheriting one half, the neighbouring Pichon Baron, and his daughters inheriting the other half. One of those daughters married the Count of Lalande, which is how it came to be known as Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. The vineyards are right at the very South of Pauillac, abutting and indeed overlapping with Saint-Julien. Although a 2nd Growth, Pichon-Lalande is ranked with the Firsts in quality, and treasured for it's elegance and finesse. The 2022 is a truly magical wine in the making and all Bordeaux lovers will want this in their cellar. Will 2022 be the next 1982? Time will tell...

A neighbour of both Pavie and Troplong-Mondot, Pavie-Macquin is managed by Nicolas Thienpont, who owns Le Pin and Vieux Chateau Certan. It was founded by Albert Macquin in the 1880's, the man who is widely credited for saving Saint-Émilion, by perfecting the grafting technique that put an end to the phylloxera pandemic. He was an expert on soil types and vine varietals, and built up the estate through many small acquisitions. Pavie-Macquin is still owned by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pavie-Macquin is not widely known, but loved by those who have discovered it. Under the care of Thienpont and consulting wine maker Stéphane Derenoncourt, the wines have really started to shine! The 2022 is really delicious already, fresh and vibrant, with super fruit and a saline finish.

Château Cantenac Brown is a third growth Margaux, located to the west of the appellation in Cantenac, neighbouring Château Margaux & Château Palmer. Founded over 200 years ago by a Scotsman, John Lewis Brown, it has changed hands many times, and has benefited from serious investment in the last couple of decades. It was purchased in 2019 by a French agricultural engineer, Tristan Le Lous, who has really focussed on improving the vineyards, committing to environmentally-friendly viticulture and winemaking, building on the recent success of the team led by Jose Sanfins. The 2022 is lovely, with great depth and weight to the dark fruit, and so long.

We are delighted to offer the 2022 Saint-Juliens that have been created through the vision of Henri Martin, who pieced together the estates of Château Gloria and Château Saint-Pierre. Henri Martin, grandson of a cellar-master at Château Gruaud-Larose and son of a cooper from the village of Beychevelle, had a remarkable vision - to create a new chateau in Saint-Julien, by buying up parcels and rows of vines from the other cru classé properties across the appellation - something never done before. The result was Château Gloria, which he created between the 1930's and the 1970's. He then added Château Saint-Pierre to his portfolio. The properties are still run by the family. Gloria isn't a cru classé itself, simply because it didn't exist in the 1855 classification, but it is appreciated as much for its superb quality as for its pleasing prices. The 2022 is delicious, a very classic Saint-Julien with lovely balance!

Founded in the 17th Century, Château Saint-Pierre, a 4th Grand Cru Classé, was broken up and scattered as a result of several inheritances. In 1982, through a combination of luck and persistence, Henri Martin managed to re-form the estate as it was known in 1855. Saint-Pierre and Gloria vie with each other from vintage to vintage.

Today see the release of the esteemed Margaux 3rd Growth, Château Malescot St Exupery. Malescot have been on a great run of form in recent years and the 2022 definitely stood out as one of the best wines in the appellation during our En Primeur tastings back in April. As you may have noticed, we are very selective with the wines that we offer and we certainly feel that the 2022 Malescot deserves a place in your cellar.

And finally from Pomerol today we see the release of a "impressive" 95-96pt Gazin.

"2022 is certainly the greatest overall vintage I have ever tasted." - Andy Lench of Bordeaux Wine Locators on his 37th vintage tasted en primeur.

"This is the 40th year I have tasted barrel samples in Bordeaux, but I have never come across anything like the 2022 vintage. It was one of the hottest and driest growing seasons in the history of France’s most famous wine region, yet it produced thousands of opulent and structured but still fresh and balanced wines. They are exciting...it was a joyous and fascinating experience to taste so many special wines. And there was high quality from top to bottom. The 2022 vintage really is something unique." - James Suckling

2022 Pichon Lalande (Pauillac)

GVWM Wine of the Vintage & Over-Achiever

One of the gems from Pauillac is unquestionably the 2022 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande, which is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. A hypothetical blend of the 2019 and 2020, it's a full-bodied, concentrated, opulent Comtesse offering beautiful blue fruits, some chocolate, leafy herbs, and undeniable minerality, ripe, velvety tannins, and a great finish. Despite the higher Cabernet Sauvignon component, this stays silky, expansive, and incredibly sexy. It's going to be drinkable with just 4-5 years of bottle age but should have a lengthy drink window. Hats off to director Nicolas Glumineau for another legendary wine from this château. - Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Pichon Comtesse Reserve is made from 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant scents of juicy black plums, blackberry pie, and boysenberry preserves, plus hints of black cherries, cedar chest, and lavender. The medium to full-bodied palate coats the mouth with perfumed black fruit preserves, supported by plush tannins and just enough freshness, finishing on an earthy note. pH 3.8. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent

Another wine that's going to flirt with perfection is the 2022 Château Pavie Macquin, and this might be the finest vintage I've ever tasted from this address. A blend of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon, it reveals an inky purple hue as well as a stunning bouquet of pure cassis, liquid black raspberries, truffle, scorched earth, and graphite. Full-bodied, concentrated, and massive on the palate, it may be the largest-scaled Pavie Macquin ever produced. But don't let that scare you off – it stays flawlessly balanced, has pure, fine-grained tannins, and a great finish. I'll be a buyer. - Jeb Dunnuck

2022 Gazin (Pomerol)

95-96 JS / 94 JA / 94 DE / 92-94+ WA / 92-94 WI / 92-94 JD

A serious Pomerol even in the lightest of vintages, so it really can relax into its natural character in 2022. Strict tannins, but that is often the case for this wine, relaxing into liqourice, cocoa bean, espresso, rosemary, underbrush, slightly drying on the finish, but this has a ton of impact, it has all the elements for ageing, an impressive wine. - Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

2022 Saint Pierre (Saint Julien)

GVWM Standout Mid-Range Wine

95-97+ JD / 95-97 WI / 93-94+ WA / 94 DE / 94 JA

A real "wow" wine in the making, the 2022 Château Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) checks in as 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. This darker, powerful wine offers up loads of pure cassis and black cherry-like fruits as well as ample chocolate, graphite, and lead pencil nuances. Full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, it nevertheless stays pure, impeccably balanced, and shows a real sense of elegance. The alcohol here is 13.9% and the élevage is in 48% new French oak. Tasted twice with consistent notes. - Jeb Dunnuck

2022 Malescot St Exupery (Margaux)

94-96 JD / 93-95+ WI / 93-95 WA / 93-95 VM / 94 DE

The 2022 Château Malescot Saint Exupéry is gorgeous and certainly a Margaux worth seeking out. Dense purple-hued, with a rich, powerful bouquet of ripe black fruits, melted chocolate, smoked tobacco, and spice, it picks up a beautiful floral character with air, is full-bodied, and has a layered, opulent mouthfeel as well as a great finish. It shows the vintage's building yet velvety tannins and is going to warrant just 4-5 years or more of bottle age, but it's a brilliant wine in the making. - Jeb Dunnuck

Juicy and lively, cool and crisp with concentrated but cool tannins that give the structure and density. It's massy, full, upfront, but retains a charm in that nothing is harsh or austere or too spiced. It's full but there's something very captivating about this, has excitement and vibrancy and will be totally delicious and moreish when the time is right. Lovely acidity, beautiful red fruits, crisp and tense yet layered and ripe, mineral too. Gives you the emotion! Harvest 7-27 September. Ageing in French oak, 60% new, 40% one year old. - Georgina Hindle, Decanter
