Today sees the release of one of the most impressive 2022s that is one of the best vintages we have tasted to date from a property that has really improved over the last few years, Château Beau-Séjour Bécot. Beau-Séjour Bécot's 20 hectares of vineyards are superbly sited on a limestone plateau in the north-west part of the appellation. With a 99-100 point review from Vinous in the bag, at $95/bottle the urge to buy a case or two for the cellar is very hard to resist!
This morning also sees the release of the one of the most highly sought-after wines of Margaux, Rauzan-Ségla. The esteemed Margaux 2nd Growth is owned by the Chanel Group, and has been on an amazing run of form over the last two decades. Since new winemaker, Nicolas Audebert, took over the reins from John Kolossa in 2015, he has continued to raise the bar in terms of quality. Châteaux Rauzan-Ségla was owned by the de Rauzan family for over two centuries, and was one of Thomas Jefferson's favourite wines. In the 1855 classification it was placed at the top of the 2nd Growths, just behind Mouton, which was eventually promoted to a 1st. As with so many chateaux, Rauzan-Ségla was sold a number of times and lost its way, only to be rescued in 1994 by its current owners, who have invested in it enormously in the intervening years. Under the guidance of Kolassa and now Audebert, it has gone from strength to strength, and is now a highly desirable and highly in demand Margaux. We were thoroughly impressed when tasting this in April, it's long, complex, and really very delicious!
Another superb Margaux to be released today is the 2022 Château Giscours. Château Giscours, which has a long history dating back to the thirteen hundreds, was bought by the late Dutch entrepreneur Eric Albada-Jelgersma in 1995, and is now owned by his three children. However, it is the unerring management of Alexander van Beek that has bought Giscours on and upwards to where it is today. Situated in the heart of the Margaux appellation, this third growth estate has undergone massive change and considerable replanting with a change from 60% Merlot in 1995 to the current 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, and a steady increase in biodynamic farming.
Finally we are pleased to offer the 2022 St Emilion from Jacques Thienpont of Le Pin, L’If. The estate was purchased by Thienpont in 2010 and like Le Pin being named after a pine tree on that property, L’If is named for a yew tree at this estate in St Emilion. The 8-hectare vineyard is approximately 2/3 Merlot and 1/3 Cabernet Franc planted on chalky limestone and clay soils. Production is under about 1000 cases per year, and the 2022 was a standout when we tasted in from barrel, very vibrant with exceptional purity.

"2022 is certainly the greatest overall vintage I have ever tasted." - Andy Lench of Bordeaux Wine Locators on his 37th vintage tasted en primeur.
"This is the 40th year I have tasted barrel samples in Bordeaux, but I have never come across anything like the 2022 vintage. It was one of the hottest and driest growing seasons in the history of France’s most famous wine region, yet it produced thousands of opulent and structured but still fresh and balanced wines. They are exciting...it was a joyous and fascinating experience to taste so many special wines. And there was high quality from top to bottom. The 2022 vintage really is something unique." - James Suckling
2022 L'If (Saint Emilion)
98-99 JS / 94-96 JD / 93-95+ WI / 93-95 WA / 93-95 VM
Coming from the limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion, the 2022 Château L'If is based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc raised in 50% new oak. This is a mineral-bomb, delivering ample black raspberry fruit and floral nuances, full-bodied richness, a layered, ripe, textured mouthfeel, and outstanding length. Harvested from September 14-26, with an alcohol level of 14.3% and a pH of 3.52, it's an utterly classic Saint-Emilion that will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and have 20-25 years of overall longevity. This might be the finest vintage I've tasted. - Jeb Dunnuck

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Rauzan-Segla is made from 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, aging for 18 months in French oak, 50% of it new. A little swirling unleashes an explosion of black and red currant jelly, wild blueberries, and chocolate-covered cherries, giving way to a fragrant undercurrent of violets, underbrush, and crushed rocks with a touch of star anise. The full-bodied palate is built like a brick house and crafted like a Chanel suit, with a firm backbone of super-ripe, grainy tannins and impressive tension supporting a gorgeous array of floral, spice, and black fruit layers, finishing very long and with impeccable grace. pH 3.7. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent

GVWM Over-Achiever
98-100 VM / 96-98 WA / 95-97+ JD / 95-97 WI / 96 DE / 96 JA
The 2022 Beau-Séjour Bécot has a bit more Cabernet Franc than most years, which comes through immediately in the wine's aromatic profile. Dark, rich and expressive., the 2022 is seriously impressive. Crushed flowers, herbs, mint, blood orange and red-toned fruit all build into a sumptuous, majestic finish that just explodes on the back end. The 2022 is one of the very finest editions of Beau-Séjour Bécot I can remember tasting. It is a great, great wine. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2022 Giscours (Margaux)
97-98 JS / 95-97 VM / 96 DE / 94-96+ WA / 94-96 WI / 94-96 JD / 95 JA
A seriously impressive and beguiling Giscours in 2022 and one of the most elegant. A remarkable wine with gorgeous clarity and purity and just the most gentle seduction, even more so because it really doesn't feel as if it's trying too hard yet still delivering depth and complexity. Fresh and lifted, fragrant and so juicy but with textured tannins that give both the weight, structure and density to the quite bright, tangy, vibrant fruit. Nicely composed, feels quite powerful yet restrained and finessed offering lots of immediate drinking appeal but with a serious backbone that suggests long ageing too. Elegant, finessed, subtle confidence with such cool minerality that gives freshness all the way through. It's not the most dense, or fleshy, but so refined. A compelling wine. Possible upscore in bottle. 3% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 3.70pH. A yield of 27hl/ha, the lowest ever. No Sirene de Giscours this year. 100% grand vin. Ageing 17 months, 50% new oak. 10-15% press wine. Tasted twice. - Georgina Hindle, Decanter
