"Real pedigree and sophistication here, this is a magnificent Pichon-Baron that achieves a new level of precision" according to Neal Martin, writing about Château Pichon Baron's 2022, which they have released this morning. This is one of our perennial favorites, and we were thoroughly impressed when we tasted the incredibly elegant barrel sample in April, packed with juicy dark damson fruit and showing beautiful structure and length. Located on the opposite side of the road from Pichon Lalande, and not far from Chateau Latour, Chateau Pichon Baron is quite possibly the most picturesque of all of the grand Chateaux on the Left Bank. This prestigious 2nd Growth produces stunning Cabernet based wines that can rival the First Growths in terms of quality. The property has seen massive investment since it was purchased in 1987 - beneath the formal garden and mirror pond in front of the grand Chateau lies a state of the art winery that resembles a scene from James Bond’s Dr. No, along with newly completed barrel cellars - and the wines just get better and better. You can't really go wrong with Pichon Baron!
We've had much interest recently in the delightful Margaux chateau, Brane-Cantenac, and so we are very excited to offer their 2022, which has received huge ratings from all of the critics - on par with a number of First Growths - and will ultimately prove to be one of the best-buys of the vintage! Brane-Cantenac, known as Château Gorce before it was bought by the Baron de Brane in 1833, is set amongst the superb terroir of the village of Cantenac in the Margaux appellation. Henri Lurton who has worked at the estate since 1986, is presently at the helm and is making superb wines that rival the best in Bordeaux. Brane-Cantenac has been described as the "Pauillac of Margaux." This is really is a stunning Margaux and it will have great longevity. A recent bottle of 1924 (!) proved just how well this wine can age!
Two more superb wines released from Pessac-Léognan this morning are the red and white from Domaine de Chevalier, both already attracting strong scores. Each wine bears a special label in 2022 to celebrate Olivier Bernard’s 40th vintage at Domaine de Chevalier. A family owned estate, the vineyards are surrounded by forests in the highest part of the Pessac appellation, and the vines stay cool with the wines retaining a remarkable freshness. Renowned for both their red and their white, Domaine de Chevalier are on a run of good form at the moment, producing some of their best ever wines.
Phelan Segur is located opposite Château Montrose and on a gravel outcropping near the Pauillac border in Saint-Estèphe. The estate "has been one of the Médoc's rising stars for some years now...hitting new levels of quality and consistency, realizing all the potential of years such as 2019 but also over-performing in vintages such as 2017, and producing authoritative, concentrated wines with refined tannins and lively acids.” (Wine Advocate).
Clos L’Eglise is a jewel of a property which is situated next door to Chateau Clinet and just across the road from L’Eglise Clinet. Lafleur and Petrus are situated to the east and Le Pin to the south. The vineyard comprises just 15 hectares of old vines that produce around 2,000 cases of wine per year. When Clos L’Eglise get it right the wine easily competes with the very best wines in Pomerol, and when you compare the price of Clos L'Eglise to it's Pomerol neighbors, the value proposition is more than compelling...

"2022 is certainly the greatest overall vintage I have ever tasted." - Andy Lench of Bordeaux Wine Locators on his 37th vintage tasted en primeur.
"This is the 40th year I have tasted barrel samples in Bordeaux, but I have never come across anything like the 2022 vintage. It was one of the hottest and driest growing seasons in the history of France’s most famous wine region, yet it produced thousands of opulent and structured but still fresh and balanced wines. They are exciting...it was a joyous and fascinating experience to taste so many special wines. And there was high quality from top to bottom. The 2022 vintage really is something unique." - James Suckling
2022 Pichon Baron (Pauillac)
96-98 VM / 96-98 JD / 97 DE / 96-97 JS / 95-97 WA / 95-97 WI
The 2022 Pichon Baron was picked 8 September to 3 October and matured in 70% new oak. It has wonderful precision on the nose, with intense blackberry and bilberry fruit, crushed stone and graphite. The oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is tensile right from the start. Taut and linear, fresh, quite saline with a nuanced touch of black pepper toward the finish. Real pedigree and sophistication here, this is a magnificent Pichon Baron that achieves a new level of precision thanks to the more piecemeal Sauternes-inspired harvest in tandem with their new winery. - Neal Martin, Vinous Media

2022 Brane Cantenac (Margaux)
98 DE / 96-98 VM / 96-98 JD / 96-97 JS / 95-97+ WI / 95-97 WA
The 2022 Brane Cantenac, as usual, is a wine that you must sit and contemplate before words gush forth. It was picked from 7 September to 10 October (their tiny plot of Carmenère) at 31.5hL/ha and contains 16% vin de presse from the Cabernet Sauvignon. It is well-defined and fresh, a very subtle Margaux, precise with blackberry, wild strawberry, cedar and tobacco scents. As previous vintages have proven, there's a kind of "hidden depth" that will become apparent postbottling. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very elegant and unashamedly classic in style. This is blessed with haunting poise, composed and detailed on the finish. This Margaux is not a show stopper, which in any case, is not really Henri Lurton/Brane Cantenac’s signature style. Instead, it is a wine that 15 to 20 years down the road, you are going to treasure. - Neal Martin, Vinous Media

2022 Domaine De Chevalier Rouge (Pessac Leognan)

94-96 WA / 95 DE
Special label to celebrate Olivier Bernard’s 40th vintage at Domaine de Chevalier.
As to the Grand Vin 2022 Domaine De Chevalier, this awesome Graves is based on 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and the rest Cabernet Franc. Vinified in a mix of concrete and wood tanks, with a portion seeing malolactic fermentation in barrel, it offers a deep purple/ruby hue as well as a brilliant bouquet of crème de cassis, graphite, smoke tobacco, and damp earth. Reminding me of a supercharged version of the 2016, it's full-bodied and has a layered, silky mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. Released with a new, one-off label, the 2022 celebrates Olivier Bernard's 40th year at the château, and it's certainly a wine worth seeking out. - Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Domaine De Chevalier Blanc brings more dimensions and layers, as well as richness. Based on 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon, aging in 40% new oak, it has a beautiful perfume of honeyed citrus, subtle tropical flowers, and chalky, minerality nuances. 2022 Phelan Segur (Saint Estephe)
96-97 JS / 95-97 VM / 94-96 JD / 95 JA / 95 DE / 93-95 WI
Elegant and well balanced, a ton of St Estèphe signature, this is really impressive, well controlled, wuth purity and depth to the cassis fruits, sweetened by cherry pie, flaky pastry, cinnammon, a welcome bitter finish of aniseed and cocoa beans that gives balance to the overall richness of the palate. There are big tannins but also clean wet stone minerality, and things stretch out through the palate, giving grip and no let up in intensity. 55% new oak, 3.8ph, 28hl/h yield. Blend finished in March, 28l/h yield. Selected native yeasts. - Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

From an incredible terroir in the heart of Pomerol (just across the street from L'Eglise Clinet), the 2022 Clos L'Eglise includes slightly less Merlot than usual and is 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. It has a ripe, sexy, full-bodied profile as well ample red, blue, and black fruits, notes of graphite, chalky minerality, and chocolate, ripe, velvety tannins, terrific purity, and a great finish. This classic, opulent, sexy Pomerol is going to drink nicely with just a few years of bottle age yet should evolve for two decades. - Jeb Dunnuck
