Today sees the release of Château Pontet-Canet, always a highly anticipated and very popular Pauillac! Château Pontet-Canet can trace its origins back to 1725, when Jean-François Pontet gave his name to the estate he had acquired. The wine was not château-bottled until 1972 and in 1975 the property was sold to Guy Tesseron, of the Tesseron family, one of the finest exponents of luxury, very old, aged Cognacs. The Tesserons also own Château Lafon-Rochet in St-Estephe. Today, Château Pontet-Canet is owned and run by Alfred (his 47th vintage!) and Michel Tesseron, who have been strong proponents of biodynamic farming - the estate became the first Médoc classified growth to achieve both organic and biodynamic certification back in 2010 - and working with the land is now paying dividends. Something they tried this year was to use clay as sunscreen on the grapes to avoid sunburn! Pontet-Canet's 78 hectares of vineyards adjoin those of Mouton Rothschild and since the 2000 vintage, they have been making wines that challenge the very best in Bordeaux. We were very impressed on tasting the wine from barrel, and Pontet-Canet is always popular, so move quickly!

Another wine that is on most people's wish list every year is Chateau Calon Ségur. Calon Ségur is the most northerly of all the Medoc Grand-Crus Classes and produces one of the very best and age-worthy wines on the Left Bank. It is also known for having a heart on its label. The reason for the heart is that the former owner, Marquis de Ségur, owned a number of estates (including Lafite and Latour) but he declared, "My heart belongs to Calon". Due to its popularity, we never have enough Calon to supply demand…don’t hesitate.

One of the most anticipated wines of the vintage is the brilliant Super Second Growth, Château Cos d’Estournel. Jeb Dunnuck has thrown his hat in the ring, declaring that Cos '22 is, "one of the finest wines to ever pass my lips,” and that it is a monument in the making! Cos d'Estournel has been on an amazing run of form in recent years and it is without doubt the leading estate in St-Estéphe. It is located in the south of the appellation on the border with Pauillac and its vineyards are superbly situated on a south-facing gravel ridge with a high clay content, just north of Château Lafite Rothschild. The wines have a consistent track record of ageing well, developing a complexity and intensity that can rival and sometimes surpass the First Growths.

Since 2005 Chateau Haut-Bailly has been on an incredible run of form producing wines that compete with the very best in Bordeaux. Chateau owner, Robert Wilmers, has given winemaker Véronique Sanders carte blanche to do whatever is necessary to achieve perfection. In 2005, 2008 and 2010 they created magnificent wines that set a new benchmark for quality, and the 2022 follows in those footsteps.

"2022 is certainly the greatest overall vintage I have ever tasted." - Andy Lench of Bordeaux Wine Locators on his 37th vintage tasted en primeur.

"This is the 40th year I have tasted barrel samples in Bordeaux, but I have never come across anything like the 2022 vintage. It was one of the hottest and driest growing seasons in the history of France’s most famous wine region, yet it produced thousands of opulent and structured but still fresh and balanced wines. They are exciting...it was a joyous and fascinating experience to taste so many special wines. And there was high quality from top to bottom. The 2022 vintage really is something unique." - James Suckling

The 2022 Calon-Ségur is another superb wine from this historic Saint-Estèphe third growth that began a comprehensive renaissance the better part of a decade ago. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis and blackberries mingled with hints of fresh mint, burning embers, licorice and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with terrific depth at the core, supple tannins and a long, saline finish. The blend consists of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Vincent Millet observed that "when you tasted the Merlot, you were under the impression that you were tasting Cabernet." - William Kelley, Wine Advocate

2022 Pontet Canet (Pauillac)

What a finish on this Pontet-Canet. So much energy and brightness. It's full-bodied yet so tight and focused with superb fruit and transparency. It is racy and fine with super fine texture. It's like crushed cabernet sauvignon with cassis, tobacco and cigar box. Licorice and spices. Freshness of the seed. 57% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot, 4% cabernet franc, and 4% petit verdot. - James Suckling

The 2022 Château Haut-Bailly is going to be one of the legendary vintages at this château, and it should be a no-brainer purchase for readers. Based on 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, it has an incredible perfume of cassis, ripe black cherries, crushed stone, smoke tobacco, and wood smoke. Earning more than a few expletives in my notes, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and ultra-fine, silky tannins. Hold onto your hats, ladies and gentlemen, this is an incredible wine in the making! - Jeb Dunnuck

98-100 JD / 97-99+ WI / 98-99 JS / 97 JA / 97 DE / 95-97 VM

One of the finest wines to ever pass my lips, the 2022 Château Cos D'Estournel is a monument in the making. Based on 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and 1% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this saturated ruby/purple-hued Saint-Estèphe offers a full-bodied, massive, opulent style as well as perfumed red, blue, and black fruits, ample spice, chocolate, graphite, and lead pencil-like aromatics, a stacked mid-palate, flawless balance, and a monster of a finish. An improved version of the 2009 (if that's possible), this is a legendary wine in the making. Hats off to Michel Reybier and technical director Dominique Arangoïts. - Jeb Dunnuck

2022 Cos D'Estournel Blanc (Bordeaux)

96-97 JS / 96 DE / 94-96 JD / 95 JA / 92-94+ WI / 92-94 VM

Even more impressive, the 2022 Château Cos D'Estournel Blanc is 74% Sauvignon Blanc and 26% Sémillon brought up all in used oak. A focused, pure, seamless white, it has obvious minerality in its lemon and lime fruits as well as mint and leafy herb nuances. Hitting 13.4% alcohol with a pH of 3.2, it's going to benefit from a year or three of bottle age and drink beautifully over the following decade at least. - Jeb Dunnuck
