We are delighted to offer the 2022 release from the prestigious First Growth that has been on an amazing run of from over the last few vintages, Château Mouton Rothschild. It was mind-bogglingly good when we tasted it in April, packed with rich, dark, brooding bramble fruits, spice box aromas and layer upon layer of complexity. Superb! Beginning in 1924 and continuing from 1945, Mouton Rothschild have commissioned an artist to design their label. Jean Carlu, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Prince Charles have all designed these iconic labels. Whoever they choose for 2022, this will certainly be an exceedingly fine addition to any Mouton collection.

Château Canon is on fire at the moment, and we always look forward to tasting both new and mature vintages. The 2022 absolutely lived up to expectations in April, notable in particular for its balance and elegance, with superbly fine tannins - a truly graceful wine...and increasingly in demand! Chateau Canon can trace its history back to 1760 when it was purchased by Jaques Kanon, a privateer who made his fortune capturing English ships for Louis XV. In 1996 it was bought by Chanel, who have invested heavily. The vineyards are planted to 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, two varieties which are ideally suited for its clay-limestone terroir. During this period Canon was managed by John Kolasa, who also oversaw the Chanel group’s other Bordeaux property located in the Margaux appellation, Chateau Rauzan Segla, and wrought remarkable changes at both properties up until 2015. As with Rauzan Segla, new director Nicolas Audebert, has continued the upwards trajectory, and Canon goes on from strength to strength.

A little later than expected, but most welcome, we are thrilled to offer one of the top wines of the vintage from Saint-Julien, the 2022 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. The estate owes its name to its "beautiful pebbles” ("beaux cailloux" in French) that geologists refer to less romantically as Gunzian gravel. These quartz pebbles were deposited by the ancient Garonne some two million years ago, and force the vines to send their roots deep to find nutrients. Belonging to just six families since 1720, this quintessential St-Julien 2nd Growth estate falls firmly in the camp of the Super Seconds.

Domaines Barons de Rothschild have released their leading Pomerol wine today, Château L’Evangile. This is is one of the most prestigious estates in Pomerol that produces one of the most sought-after wines in the appellation. It is located in the far east of Pomerol and its vineyards border those of La Conseillante, Gazin and Cheval Blanc. L`Evangile has always been a top-class estate but quality has been pushed noticeably higher since Domaines Baron de Rothschild of Château Lafite acquired a majority shareholding in 1990. Since then, while the vineyards have seen only improvement and mild expansion remaining planted to Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc, the winemaking has been improved dramatically. The wines are now genuinely challenging Pétrus and Lafleur in terms of quality. According to Saskia de Rothschild, â€œwe have a DNA at Lafite to always look for delicacy in our wines.”

Finally we have one of the original Right Bank cult "garagiste” wines, St Emilion’s Valandraud. It can offer a totally hedonistic drinking experience, and there is no doubt it will evolve beautifully over the coming decades. Valandraud is owned by Jean-Luc and Murielle Andraud who's inaugural vintage was 1991. The tiny vineyard actually used to be a vegetable garden near Pavie Macquin! People credit Jean-Luc with starting the garage wine movement in Bordeaux and he illustrated how reducing grape yields from the lesser terroir vineyards and selecting only the very best grapes could produce outstanding wines. Valandraud only produces around 1,000 cases a year and, not surprisingly, this rich and concentrated St-Emilion is now one of the most sought-after wines in Bordeaux.

"2022 is certainly the greatest overall vintage I have ever tasted." - Andy Lench of Bordeaux Wine Locators on his 37th vintage tasted en primeur.

“It reminds me of 1982. But 2022 is better than 1982. In 1982 the yields were 60 hectoliters per hectare. Today, yields are dramatically lower. And as a matter of style, 2022, just like 1982 will be approachable young.” - Michel Rolland

"This is the 40th year I have tasted barrel samples in Bordeaux, but I have never come across anything like the 2022 vintage. It was one of the hottest and driest growing seasons in the history of France’s most famous wine region, yet it produced thousands of opulent and structured but still fresh and balanced wines. They are exciting...it was a joyous and fascinating experience to taste so many special wines. And there was high quality from top to bottom. The 2022 vintage really is something unique." - James Suckling

Deep garnet-purple in color, it soars out of the glass with graceful, energetic notes of crushed blackcurrants, redcurrant preserves, wild blueberries, and dark chocolate, followed by touches of violets, clove oil, cumin seed, and cast-iron pan. From an estate that is delivering its greatest run of vintages since the superb Post War series that preceded the frosts of 1956, the 2022 Canon is a magical wine that will be worth every effort to track down. Wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, wild plums and cherries mingled with hints of bay leaf, spices and violets, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with huge levels of concentration, vibrant acids and beautifully refined tannins. Concluding with a long, saline finish, this pure, perfumed and ineffably complete Canon is built for the ages, even if its structural polish is such that it will be approachable at a surprisingly early age. -William Kelley, Wine Advocate

2022 Valandraud (Saint Emilion)
97-99 JD / 97-98 JS / 96-98 WI / 96-98 VM / 97 JA / 96 DE

Tasted on multiple occasions, the 2022 Château Valandraud is based on 88% Merlot and the balance an even split of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It has incredible purity in its cassis and darker, almost blue fruits as well as notes of candied violets, licorice, and spicy oak. Full-bodied, rich, and concentrated, it has perfect tannins, a great mid-palate, and flawless balance. It reminds me of hypothetical blend of the 2010 and 2009, with perhaps plenty of similarities to the 2020 as well. - Jeb Dunnuck
