The legendary Château Palmer have just released their 2022, and it is a fabulous Margaux. We were seriously impressed by this rich, dark, complex wine that exhibits incredible balance and purity. It is very Palmer, and you are going to love it! Situated just a stones thrown away from Château Margaux, Château Palmer is named after a British officer, Major General Palmer, who settled in Bordeaux in 1814. The vineyards are biodynamically farmed and the wine regularly competes with the First Growths in terms of quality. We were also blown away by the quality of their brilliant 2nd wine, Alter Ego de Palmer when we tasted it from barrel - it ranks as the best version of Alter Ego we have tasted and it is a serious, age-worthy wine that will shine on the dinner table in years to come!
When you ask almost any Bordeaux wine maker to name the best terroir in Bordeaux, the overwhelming majority say it belongs to Château Ausone. That terroir, along with the skills of Alain Vauthier have turned Château Ausone into one of world's most revered wines. Ausone is named after the Roman poet Ausonius who owned over 100 acres of vineyard around Saint Emilion. It is perched on the hillside in the southern outskirts of Saint Emilion and only has 7.3 hectares of vines (Merlot 50%, Cabernet Franc 50%) that flourish on a steep, south-east facing slope, protecting them from cold north winds and westerly rain. Production is minuscule and the wines are always in high demand, so we are delighted to offer their fabulous grand vin as well as the excellent La Chapelle.

"2022 is certainly the greatest overall vintage I have ever tasted." - Andy Lench of Bordeaux Wine Locators on his 37th vintage tasted en primeur.
"This is the 40th year I have tasted barrel samples in Bordeaux, but I have never come across anything like the 2022 vintage. It was one of the hottest and driest growing seasons in the history of France’s most famous wine region, yet it produced thousands of opulent and structured but still fresh and balanced wines. They are exciting...it was a joyous and fascinating experience to taste so many special wines. And there was high quality from top to bottom. The 2022 vintage really is something unique." - James Suckling

GVWM Wine of the Vintage

So much class in the nose with a sophisticated kaleidoscope of dark fruit such as blackcurrants, and spices such as salt and pepper, as well as cloves and nutmeg. Full-bodied. Compacted and dense yet weightless. It opens beautifully. The tannins go on and on with wonderful presence. Salty undertones. - James Suckling

I always love the second wine from this estate, and their 2022 Alter Ego De Palmer should be terrific. Based on 61% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot, aged in 25% new oak, it's a deeply hued Margaux with lots of ripe red and blue fruits, some classic chalky minerality, and floral notes. It shows the vintage's powerful, concentrated style and is full-bodied, with terrific balance. - Jeb Dunnuck

2022 Ausone (Saint Emilion)
98-100 JA / 97-99 WI / 97-98 JS / 96 -98 JD / 95-97+ VM / 94-96+ WA / 96 DE
Intense and concentrated, with fennel, aniseed and liqourice root. Where Chapelle d'Ausone celebrates a wave of opulence in the vintage, this focuses more clearly on black tea, slate, intense black chocolate. Precise and well cut, this is creamy and exuberant without sacrificing elegance and balance. Amazing depths of flavour and grip. A true En Primeur sample where you know you are a long long way from this being ready to drink. The first year, incidentally, of not Premier Grand Cru Classé A, although the ranking has not been featured on the label since 2012. No irrigation at Ausone. 100% new oak. Harvest September 5 to 27. 7.25ha. Conversion to organic farming since 2020, Philippe Baillarguet cellar master, Pauline Vauthier owner and winemaker. Potential 100 - Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

2022 La Chapelle d'Ausone (Saint Emilion)
97-98 JS / 95 JA / 93-95 WI / 94-96 JD / 94 DE / 92-94 VM / 91-93+ WA
An impressive Chapelle that opens with a wave of opulence, rich and confident in its construction. Majors on tobacco, cigar box, liqourice, chocolate, creamy damson, black cherry puree, velvety tannins. Incredible to think that this character can be teased out of pure limestone soils, but their fingerprint, with a welcome edge of salty cracker, comes in on the finish. Takes the character of the vintage and leans right in to it. Highly accomplished. 3.5ph, 100% new oak. Conversion to organic farming since 2020, Philippe Baillarguet cellar master, Pauline Vauthier owner and winemaker. - Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
