A big wine of refinement and power. Classic Bressandes.

                                                    - Allen Meadows, Burghound

Clos de la Chapelle was part of the ensemble of parcels that previously constituted the Bousse d'Or. This Clos would not take the name of Clos de la Chapelle until 1937 because during the setting up of appellations, the administration of INAO (National Institute of the Origin and the Quality) mentioned the vineyard under the village denomination, Clos des Ducs.  This land parcel was particular in that it was side-by-side with the Bousse d'Or.  Surrounded by walls, it faced the entrance of the chapel.  This vineyard was thus a seigniorial land and was included in the Bousse d'Or until 1865.

One parcel was property of the Brotherhood of the Saint Sacrément and a second parcel belonged to the Carmelite Nuns of Beaune.   The revolution and the buyback of ecclesiastical land as national assets resulted in changing ownership.  The Pinard family acquired the two entities that would later be reunited by Victor Boillot.

Tasting note: Subtle but not imperceptible wood sets off the interesting blend of spice and the sauvage-suffused nose of forest floor, red and dark raspberry and evident earth influence. There is terrific volume to the dense, muscular and powerful large-scaled flavors that retain a good sense of delineation on firmly structured, austere and hugely long finish. This is a classic Bressandes, which is to say a big wine of refinement and power though I underscore that I wouldn't touch a bottle before 10 years have passed. Sweet Spot. –Allen Meadows, Burghound

Yielding 28 hl/ha which equates to just two barrels, of which one is new. 15% whole bunches were retained. Not racked yet. Both the wood and the whole bunches can be detected on the nose, but they work well together. This is quite a substantial wine for Bressandes, but has perfectly kept its balance. Very long finish and impressive purity. Tasted: October 2020. –Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Note: a .55 ha monopole

Tasting note: This is also aromatically ripe yet cool with its elegant and pure aromas of red and blue pinot fruit that possess a lovely array of spice and floral elements. The refined and equally pure mouthfeel is similar to that of the Carelle in that it's super-sleek and beautifully well-detailed while exuding an attractive minerality on the succulent but firm finale that confirms that this will need a decade plus of cellaring to realize its fully potential. One to check out.--Allen Meadows, Burghound

Monopole. Fresh mid purple, offering a very lively sensual nose, I thought whole bunch, but no, it is the vineyard, but this is gorgeous with soft ripe strawberry fruit lifted by some top raspberry notes. Certainly a ripe style of pinot, but its lovely. The bad news is that the yield was a ridiculously low 10 hl/ha. Tasted: October 2020 –Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

2019 Clos de la Chapelle Pommard Grand Epenots 1er Cru

Tasting note: Aromas of poached plum, spice warm earth and a floral top note introduce rich and seductively textured flavors that are at once caressing yet powerful while coating the palate with sappy dry extract that also buffers the moderately austere and decidedly firm finale. This fine effort has excellent development potential and is a wine that's also going to need at least 6 to 8 years of keeping before it will be reasonably approachable. Sweet Spot. Outstanding. –Allen Meadows, Burghound

The vines were pruned short and green harvested to the extent that they delivered only 20 hl/ha. Not racked yet. Dense purple colour here. Rich cooked cherry, almost too much and the acidity comes out behind. A big boy, but it remains to be seen whether the heat effect will dissipate sufficiently. Tasted: October 2020—Jasper Morris, Burghound

New this year, comprising mostly the younger vines of Taillepieds, which suffered a little in the drought. As they are replanting elsewhere this cuvée will continue. Fresh mid purple with lively fruit and a whisker of oak on the nose. You can see the ripeness of the grapes though, almost a touch of raisins. Tasted: October 2020—Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
