Michel Niellon, who began working with his father Marcel in 1957, has crafted more than 50 vintages of extraordinary wines. From the original 4-hectare estate in Chassagne-Montrachet, Michel has built a notable reputation, creating rich, ripe premiers and grands crus white Burgundies as well as a small amount of excellent premier cru red. Today, three generations of the Niellon family currently work at the domaine. With the help of his son-in-law, Michel Coutoux, who joined him in 1991, Niellon has increased the estate’s production by buying new vineyards and building a larger winery. His grandson, Matthieu Bresson, also joined the winery, after graduating from La Lycée Viticole in Beaune. Each generation contributes their unique knowledge and expertise to create the finest wines.

One wine that's indubitably built for the cellar is Niellon's emblematic 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées Clos de la Truffière. Opening in the glass with scents of crisp orchard fruit, Meyer lemon, wheat toast and a subtle touch of reduction, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and incisive, with fine depth at the core, lively acids, and a long, precise finish. William Kelley – The Wine Advocate

This is the Niellon’s oldest plot, hard to work as the vines grow almost straight on the rock. There is also a hydric stress risk here. Clear pale colour, the nose is a little blocked today. White fruit, excellent texture, just the right acidity, savoury saline notes but sheer class too. Lovely. Jasper Morris – Inside Bugundy

An opulent style, this white boasts lush flavors of peach, apricot, butter and toasty, spicy elements. It's beautifully balanced, the richness offset by tangy, lime-tinged acidity, with terrific length on the finish. Drink now through 2025. 70 cases imported. — BS – Wine Spectator

Note: from a .54 ha parcel of leased vines that Niellon has exploited since 1988 and he believes that they were planted in 1939
Tasting note: Smoky aromas of the essence of white peach are given added breadth with hints of citrus peel and passion fruit. There is fine richness to the beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors that are at once suave and succulent while offering very good length on the lemon rind-tinged finish. This too should be approachable young thanks to the abundant level of dry extract. Outstanding – Allen Meadows - Burghound

2018 Michel Niellon Chevalier Montrachet

97 WS / 95 DE / 95 WA / 95 JM / 93 BH

$639.89/750ml (In Stock) Buy Now

A white of mouthfilling proportions—part vintage and part appellation—exhibiting peach, lemon cake, hazelnut and lime blossom aromas and flavors. Majestic and complex, its layers unfurl from beginning to the long, ethereal aftertaste. Superb. Best from 2023 through 2033. 70 cases imported. — BS, Wine Spectator

Chevalier-Montrachet arguably performed best of the white Grands Crus in 2018, thanks to its altitude. This 1963 planting of 0.23ha is a case in point, as it has produced a characteristically racy, chalky, mineral-edged white with orange zest and lemon tart flavours embellished by fine, spicy, aromatic oak. Classy winemaking from Michel Coutoux.—Tim Atkin, Decanter

A deep and complex bouquet mingling notes of mandarin, apple, pear and peach with nuances of toasted nuts, fresh pastry and nutmeg introduces Niellon's 2018 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, rich and textural wine that's ample and muscular, with lively acids and a long, spicy finish. Reminiscent of a slightly livelier version of Niellon's 2015 Chevalier, this is quite open and expressive and will show well young. WK – The Wine Advocate

Clear pale colour. Very chiselled clean pure nose too, just what one wants from Chevalier. The bouquet grows steadily from its discreet start. A little bit of fresh pear. Sweetly silky texture with a touch of toast behind. Classic and powerful, not as fleshy as some years. Tasted: October 2019—Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Note: from a .23 ha parcel of vines planted in '62 and '68

Tasting note: A ripe but cool and restrained nose speaks of mildly exotic and very floral aromas that flash plenty of spice and soft wood notes. There is excellent volume and the best mid-palate density in the range to the opulent and oily flavors that exude plenty of minerality on the powerful and driving finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is a big and serious Chevalier.—Allen Meadows, Burghound
