In stock now from the Guinaudeau family of Pomerol's Chateau Lafleur, whose grand vin is one of the most coveted wines in the world, are the 2019 and 2020 vintages of the Grand Village Rouge. Both wines received glowing new press from Wine Advocate today.

William Kelley of the Wine Advocate noted that their collection of wines designated Bordeaux and Bordeaux SupÃ©rieur AOCs make "a mockery of Bordeaux's traditional hierarchy,â€ including the Grand Village which punches well above its weight. Farming and winemaking is managed by the same team as Lafleur making the value proposition all the more enticing. The vineyard is increasingly being replanted or grafted over to vine genetics from Lafleur, and lavished with the same viticultural attention to detail, now thought of as a â€œvillage level" Lafleur. The 2019 is about 80% merlot and 20% bouchet (cabernet franc), while the 2020 is a blend of 21% bouchet and 79% merlot.

A serious, more obviously structured effort than the suave 2019, the 2020 Grand Village offers up a smoky, dense bouquet with aromas of cherries, spices, flowers, lead pencil and dark wild berries. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with rich, powdery tannins and a vibrant core of fruit, it concludes with an impressively long finish and superb controlled power. A terrific performance for this estate, the 2019 Grand Village reveals a delicate, perfumed, complex bouquet with inviting aromas of dark wild berries, iris, violet, menthol and lead pencil. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, enveloping and supple, fleshy and crystalline, with a delicate, layered core of fruit framed by supple, polished tannins, concluding with a saline, lead pencil-inflected finish.
