Château Cantemerle : région Bordeaux Haut-Médoc

Cantemerle is one of the perennial Left Bank favorites for excellent QPR. Tracing its viticultural history back to the mid-14th Century, Cantemerle is one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux and was deemed a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification. Located in the southern part of the Bordeaux Medoc peninsula, near the villages of Macau & Ludon, the property consists of 225 acres of vineyards planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon with a current average vine age of 35 years. The estate is known for producing wines of high aromatic concentrations and being representative of the Medoc region, in general.

The value proposition with Cantemerle is so compelling - for as little as $30/bottle you have a beautiful, traditionally-styled 5th Growth that will age gracefully for at least 40 years. When you consider the 1989 is currently selling for ~$240 per bottle (which is delicious to drink now!), it makes a lot of sense to tuck a few cases of top young vintages away to enjoy in years to come when the wine reaches full maturity. In celebrated vintages like 2019 and others below, it definitely deserves a place in your cellar!

Plenty of smoked cedar oak on the opening beats, this is full-throated in its extraction, but comes across as confident rather than too much, and as it softens the damson and black cherry fruits are attractive. A healthy 55hl/h yield, with 40% new oak. - Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

A red with lots of currant, blackberry, fresh-herb and tobacco character. Hint of mushroom, too. It’s full and layered with polished, chewy tannins and a bright and fresh finish. Very long and focused. Give it time to come together. Very classic character here. Best after 2026. - James Suckling

A well-constructed wine that is ripe with black fruits and integrated tannins, this is in a good place for aging. Black-currant fruitiness is balanced by a dry, smoky core that holds promise. Drink this wine from 2026. - RV, Wine Enthusiast

Plenty of menthol, blackberry and blackcurrant aromas in this elegant, medium-weight Haut-Médoc that’s got as much freshness as ripeness and a long, clean, mineral and herbal finish. An incredibly food-flexible wine! Drink or hold. - James Suckling

Impressive richness and clarity of red and dark berries. Lightly spiced-pastry aromas, too. The palate has a very crisp, polished and groomed tannin texture, as well as super fresh flavors that carry long. Great wine. Try from 2022. - James Suckling

Aromas of blackcurrants and kirsch with hints of dried blood orange, licorice and cocoa. Medium- to full-bodied with layers of well-integrated, finely polished tannins. Structured and toned with a fresh and lively fruit-forward palate, seasoned with spices and dried herbs. Lingering, chalky finish. Delicious now, but better after 2026. - James Suckling

2021 Cantemerle

90-91 WA / 88-90 VM

The 2021 Cantemerle is a very strong effort in a challenging year, offering up aromas of blackcurrants and plums mingled with hints of spice box, black truffle and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and charming, it's supple and succulent, with a generous core of fruit and a saline finish. It's sure to number among the sleepers of the vintage. William Kelley, Wine Advocate
