The greatest challenge of Bolgheri is that the white and rugged lands were not very fertile. The very name, “Macco”, refers to the hard sandstone and limestone rocks that were discarded during the smelting of iron and which were already known to the Etruscans and Romans, who used them in building roads.

Grattamacco was among the first to consider the Bolgheri hills for wine production, starting in 1982. The winery was the first to bottle a Bolgheri Rosso in 1994, thus becoming an ambassador of the DOC worldwide. In the same year, under the oak tree at Grattamacco, Piermario Meletti Cavallari, Michele Satta, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, Piero and Lodovico Antinori took a historic photo that captured the history of Bolgheri and the birth of the denomination.

Coming on the heels of the scorching hot 2017, this vintage started off with lots of rain in April and May that required preventative measures against fungal disease. Splendid heat and sunshine marked the summer months, but the freshness you taste in this wine is a beautiful characteristic of this cooler growing season. The 2018 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco reveals a finely nuanced bouquet with dark fruit, tobacco, smoke and earthy garrigue or underbrush. The wine leans toward full-bodied, but it also feels quite elegant and crisp on the streamlined finish. Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

#11 Decanter Wines of the Year 2023
#24 Jeb Dunnuck's Top 100 2023

Reserved layers and depth slowly begin to emerge from the 2019 Grattamacco, so it is going to need time in cellar to open and show itself. As it opens in the glass, it reveals attractive dark mineral earth, kirsch, black pepper spice, and balsamic. It is concentrated and compact at this stage, with savory richness, and it displays full and balanced structure, ripe and present tannins, and notes of cassis, cedar, and pine resin. It reveals rich complexity without ever feeling murky, and its energetic tension takes this wine to the next level. Drink 2025-2050.-Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck

A stellar wine, the 2020 Grattamacco is dark, vibrant and nuanced to the core. Black fruit, lavender, spice, leather, menthol and dried herbs infuse the 2020 with tons of character and complexity. Deep yet also wonderfully translucent, the 2020 is one of the most finessed Grattamaccos I can remember tasting. There's incredible depth and resonance here, not to mention tons of personality.—Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2016 Grattamacco Bolgheri Superiore l'Alberello

$59.98 (750ml) In Stock - Buy Now

96 WA / 95 DE

This wine delivers an exceptional quality of fruit. The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore l'Alberello is vinous and raw with an unmistakably authentic quality that gives this wine character and a specific territorial identity. You taste the flavors of the Tuscan Coast with that "macchia mediterrana," or Mediterranean brush, with ripe cherry, plum, black olive and sweet cinnamon spice. At this young stage, the wine's oak imprint is evident, but we can look forward to this relaxing and tapering down with more bottle age. Some 8,000 bottles were made.—Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
