The history of Caparzo dates back to the end of the 1960s at the dawning of Brunello di Montalcino, when a group of friends, fond of Tuscany and of wine, purchased an old ruin with vineyards at Montalcino. The farm estate was renovated, modernized, and new vineyards were planted. But over time they had their disagreements and went their separate ways.

Then Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini bought the estate (she also owns Altesino, among others). The winemaker and former film producer, supported by a very competent team of employees, owns a total of four wineries. Caparzo is the one Elisabetta loves the most, however, because it is there, as she says, that her personal handwriting is best recognizable. Vigna La Casa is a five-hectare vineyard on the hill of Montosoli and was one of the first to be bottled as a single-vineyard in 1977.

Vigna La Casa is a specific plot which is blanketed with shards of galestro schist which lend it extra brightness and focus.

Aromas of berry, toffee and chocolate with cherry undertones. It’s full-bodied with a tight, focused palate with ripe tannins and a flavorful finish. Tight and polished. Needs bottle age to open and show its true potential. Try after 2023.- James Suckling

This red displays a mix of macerated plum, cherry, mint, earth, iron and sanguine flavors. In the savory camp, without the purity of many of its peers, at least today, yet harmonious and long, with dusty tannins on the finish. Be patient. --B.S., Wine Spectator
