2009 Antinori Muffato della Sala

"The precious 2009 Muffato della Sala is stunning on all levels"
- Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
Castello della Sala is located in the Umbria region, not far from the Tuscan border, about 18 kilometers from the historic city of Orvieto. The Medieval castle’s property extends over an area of 600 hectares (1482 acres), 200 hectares (495 acres) are planted with vineyards at an altitude that varies between 220 and 470 meters above sea level (722/1541 feet) on the gently rolling hillsides that characterize the beautiful countryside in this area. Castello della Sala is the perfect place for growing white varieties. The vines grow in clay and calcareous based soils, rich in fossil shells, and they are well exposed to the rising of the sun with an excellent difference of temperature between day and night.
2009 Antinori Muffato della Sala
96 The Wine Advocate
The precious 2009 Muffato della Sala (Sauvignon Blanc, Grechetto, Semillon, Traminer and Riesling) is stunning on all levels. Aromas of candied fruit, caramel, honey and marzipan burst from the glass. The mouthfeel is viscous, rich and syrupy – but there’s enough acidity to keep it from feeling heavy or fat. The hot 2009 vintage has shaped a spectacular Muffato. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2030. Marchesi Antinori’s estate in Umbria is a revolutionary force for the region. The amazingly successful Cervaro della Sala has arguably done more to raise the image of Italian white wine than any other single bottle. Winemaker Renzo Cotarella grew up near Castello della Sala and enjoys a deeply personal relationship to this estate.--Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

The 2019 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello is brimming with youthful ebullience and demands to be noticed. The nose is immediate, direct, and very charming, with sweet, ripe, cherry fruit. On the palate it is supremely harmonious and balanced with delicious flavors of cream, spice and vivid, just-ripe, crunchy blackberry. The tannins are beautifully refined as with the superb 2016 but, if anything, there is even more refinement. Although it has not had time to develop any of its complexity or depth yet, it shows incredible potential and is already very much at ease with itself. It seems a return to a more normal vintage in 2019 has meant the vines were comfortable and not overly stressed. This 2019 Tignanello seems to reflect this wonderful sense of ease. Renzo Cotarella, CEO of Antinori and head of winemaking described this wine as ‘sbarazzino’ – vivacious. I can see what he means. - Susan Hulme, Wine Independent

Guado Al Tasso is Marchesi Antinori's super-stylish Bolgheri Superiore Bordeaux blend. In the 2019 the blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Merlot. The color is intense, almost black with a shiny, purple rim. The nose is bright, youthful, open, and brimming with roasted coffee bean notes, with oak, spice, pepper and blackberries. The oak is dominating the aromas right now with rich, dark, exotic sandalwood notes, but there is a fragrance too of mint and wildflowers. Naturally there are plenty of tannins but they are very fine in nature. The 2019 is beautifully composed on the palate with dark licorice flavors, juicy acidity and lingering, savory, silty tannins. What a wonderful texture! It is so silky and seductive, like falling into a bed of soft rose petals. Still very young, it's best to wait 2-3 years. 2024-2042. - Susan Hulme, Wine Independent

Not Rated
The Vermentino of Tenuta Guado al Tasso has a straw yellow color with greenish reflections. The nose is intense and characterized by hints of citrus, white flowers and tropical fruit. On the palate it is sapid and of good persistence, with a fresh and pleasantly citrusy finish. Although yields were lower in 2022, the wine benefits from the cooler coastal breezes. It has been produced since 1996.
