Every week we try to taste a few wines as a team, and as I love Nebbiolo, I was very excited to taste the 2019 Luigi Baudana Barolo Cerretta. It was very young and enthusiastic, really needs a few years. Though when decanted for a while it really started to open up and show what it will be over time. Such vibrant red fruits, spices and earthy notes, it will be gorgeous!

The origin of the cellar is lost in time: Baudana is the name of the family, but it is also the name of the vineyard and of the hamlet of Serralunga d’Alba, where they are located. With approximately 3 hectares farmed in Baudana and Cerretta, the prime crus of the village, it can rightly be considered a true garagiste winery.

For over thirty years, Luigi and Fiorina Baudana have grown the vineyards that have belonged to their family for generations. They cared for their vineyards with the same tenderness of their own love and with the same warmth emanating from their cellar, born under the vaults of their home. Now produced by the G.D. Vajra family, from the very beginning, the Vajra family have been impressed by Luigi and Fiorina's ambition, as well as pride in their work. Their mission everyday is for Luigi and Fiorina to be proud of the vineyards and of the wines, whilst perpetuating their gestures and seeking for the authenticity of every single vineyard.

The 2019 Barolo Cerretta is packed with dark cherry, smoke, gravel, blood orange incense, scorched earth, licorice and mocha. This ample, full-bodied Barolo offers tremendous depth and textural intensity. Powerful and brooding, with tons of muscle and tannin, the Cerretta is incredibly promising. The Luigi Baudana 2019 Barolo Cerretta is an open-knit and powerful expression of Nebbiolo from one of the best sites in Serralunga d'Alba. Cerretta is a large MGA vineyard to the north of the village, with Baudana on the hillside to the west and Prapò to the south. Serralunga d’Alba. Mid-to-deep ruby. At first, balsamic and peppery dark-cherry and leather nose that slowly increases in depth and complexity with aeration. Lots of juicy, compact cherry fruit on the palate, fantastically balanced by bags of chewy tannins. Very long, juicy and tannic and quite spectacular.-Walter Speller, JancisRobinson
