Renato Ratti is so intertwined with Barolo. He created the Barolo Vintage Chart and the first chart of the historical subzones of Barolo and Barbaresco, which in 2010 was “acknowledged” and taken into account by those wines’ respective regulatory boards. In 1973, he invented the Albeisa bottle, the vessel that became iconic for the wines of Piedmont. And he was the person who introduced the idea of a Cru in Barolo. He held the office of President of the Barolo Consortium and successively also was the Director of the Asti Consortium. He directly participated in the drafting of the procedural guidelines for the production of Alba wines, and in particular of the DOCG category. He wrote many books about Piedmontese and Italian wines.

“Enologist, writer, historian, communicator, Renato Ratti stands out as one of the leading exponents of the cultural and technical revolution that changes the world of Italian and Piedmontese wines.”

Sadly, he passed away much too young, at only 54, but his son Pietro hascarried on the family tradition. Pietro Ratti continues to follow the pathway blazed by Renato. If yesterday the primary goal was to build, today it is to conserve, a philosophy that joins production requirements with respect for the territory, the culture and sustainability.

“Quality, research, passion, respect for our history and our territory with openness towards the future, are the underlying principles of our philosophy and the expression of our wines”- Pietro Ratti

2019 Renato Ratti Barolo Serradenari

This wine expresses itself with aromas of wild cherries, tart red plums, dried violets and oolong tea leaves. The palate is elegant and almost dances across the mouth, leading with ripe red fruits that give way to savory flavors of fresh bay leaf, clove and balsam. Drink 2025–2040. — Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast

Here's an exciting new submission from the house of Ratti. Serradenari is a large MGA and one of only a few cru sites that exist on the western slope under the village of La Morra. The 2019 Barolo Serradenari has a more botanical-smelling bouquet, and by that, I mean that it has lavender bud, thyme, aniseed and the kinds of flowers and herbs that you might find in a fragrant garden. It is nuanced and delicate and framed by a light note of ash or crushed limestone. It finishes quite firm or edgy. Only 6,000 bottles were made.-Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

2019 Renato Ratti Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata

$143.89 (750ml) In Stock- Buy Now

97 WE / 96 WA

The stunning wine opens with a mix of tart red and blue berries, rose and sweet and savory spices that evolve into more savory and earthy notes. The palate is refined, framing the cherry-driven sip with tobacco and wild herb flavors to near unison. It's sublime on the finish, with vibrant acidity and fine tannins that will give the wine life for years to come. — Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast

Pietro Ratti's 2019 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata opens to a delineated bouquet with a mineral note or iodine that dovetails into purple berry fruit and lots of dried red rose and crushed flower. That evident floral imprint is something I often find in the wines that come from this side of La Morra in the south-facing ridge of vines in Rocche dell'Annunziata. With more time in the glass, the mineral note pushes to the forefront of this elegantly contoured mid-weight Barolo. The wine is powerful and tight but beautifully fragrant at the same time.-Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

2019 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco

$59.89 (750ml) In Stock- Buy Now

95 WE / 94 WA / 93 JS

This Barolo is defined by its purity of tart red fruits that interplay with more delicate aromas of dried flowers and savory spices. The palate is sturdy and structured with a solid core of ripe cherries mixed with dried tea leaves finishing with vibrant acidity. — Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast

From vineyards just outside this modern winery with external wood paneling and sleek architectural lines at the bottom of the La Morra ascent, this is Ratti's best-known wine and also its biggest production with 70,000 bottles made. The 2019 Barolo Marcenasco shows the benefits of a stylistic rejigger that prizes subdued elegance and finesse. The wine is visibly leaner in appearance and it opens to ethereal tones of blue flower, dried cherry, blood orange and chalky mineral. These little tweaks have opened an exciting new chapter for Marcenasco.-Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
