The Top Tier of Schafer-Frohlich's
2021s are Legends in the Making

The Schafer-Frohlich wines are among the most sought-after Rieslings in Germany, and the village of Bockenau has become a highly regarded subregion of the Nahe. Much of the success stems from several smart acquisitions made by Fröhlich in some of the best vineyards in the region, nearly doubling the family’s original holdings. Today, Schäfer-Fröhlich farms more than 50 acres (21 hectares) of vineyards, in the slate-based, quartzite-laced sites of Felseneck in Bockenau and Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen (which is known for iron-rich red slate) in Monzingen; as well as the porphyry-based vineyards Stromberg in Bockenau and Felsenberg and Kupfergrube in Schlossböckelheim. Some of the vineyards are so steep (up to 70 percent incline) that work by hand is almost a must. The wines are known for being extraordinarily mineral-driven with racy acidity, but still packing in juicy fruit.

The 2021 Stromberg GG offers a bright and pure, enormously radiant and earthy/herbal bouquet of crushed porphyry rocks and concentrated Riesling berry aromas intermingled with iodine notes. Great purity mixed with intensity and complexity. Full-bodied, refined and enormously salty on the palate, this is a compact, fresh and challenging dry Riesling with elegant and rich fruit, great density and no makeup at all. This is a bone dry but juicy wine that represents a long-distance runner with salty grip and tension. Tasted as a sample at the domaine in July 2022.-- Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate

Take a trip under the volcano! Still a touch of youthful, leesy funk, but that doesn’t distract from the fascinating hibiscus, flint and wild-herb aromas. How this concentration of minerality can be crammed into a silhouette this sleek is also a mystery to me, but clearly it’s possible! Diamond-bright finish that must be tasted to be believed. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.—James Suckling

A touch more fumy than the Felsenberg, gorgeously smoky/mineral first impression. Mouth-watering lemon and grapefruit tension on the palate, firmly structured by the acidity and perfectly balanced by the fruit and the savoury smokiness. -- Julia Harding MW, Jancis Robinson

This smells like breaking open a beautifully ripe passion fruit! The palate of this great dry riesling has a very sleek silhouette, but an enormous amount of complex minerality (think every shade of rock from red to black) packed into it. Like a tight rosebud that needs time to unfurl its tightly folded beauty. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.—James Suckling

The 2021 Kastanienbusch Riesling GG shows pure, fresh and elegant, juicy, ripe and concentrated fruit with herbaceous spicy aromas. Dense, lush and savory on the palate, with fine mineral acidity and highly elegant, juicy-savory fruit, this is a very long, mineral and tensioned Kastanienbusch with great purity, salinity and highly finessed texture. The finish is fresh and lemony, pure and salty, stimulating and vital, demanding and powerful. It's a very expressive Kastanienbusch. 12.5% stated alcohol. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August and again at the domaine in November 2022.—Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate

Fragrant warm lemon curd and raspberry, lemon balm and citrus. A smoky spice waits in the wings. Ridiculously complex and philosophical despite its svelte shape. Revisit in 10 years’ time. (PS), Jancis Robinson
