Mencía is the primary grape, covering nearly two-thirds of the vineyards in the wine region of Bierzo which is a small, rural and remote ancient region in the north-western corner of Castilla y León, touching the eastern border of Galicia.  Raul Perez is considered to be one of the world's visionaries of winemaking, imposing minimal intervention and allowing the wine to express itself as naturally as possible. He is considered to be the pioneer in the creation of wines from the "New Spain."

The 2020 Ultreia Valtuille is truly amazing and more so next to the unusual 2019. This is floral, expressive, fresh and balanced, with incredible elegance. There's a lot of precision here, they picked on exactly the right date, removed the white grapes, and the wine matured in barrique for five months and then in 1,000-liter oak foudre. The fine tannins show the finesse of the sandy soils. It's even a notch above the already other worldly 2018. Possibly the finest Ultreia Valtuille ever, with a moderate 12.7% alcohol. Bravo! 3,200 bottles produced.-- Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

This is the first time I have tasted La Vitoriana from Ultreia, and the 2019 Ultreia La Vitoriana is the first vintage produced. It is from the north side of the same vineyard produced by Castro Ventosa. There are only two barrels of this, and he decided to keep it apart. It's from very old vines and has freshness and a touch of rusticity. It fermented in a 700-liter amphora and matured in used barrel. This might be a little unusual, but I love it. It feels very complex, with abundant tannins, a little like Nebbiolo and in need of time in bottle. It's wild and full of character. This is one of the grand crus from Valtuille.--Luis Gutierrez, The Wine Advocate
