A historic Port House, and a historic estate in the Douro Valley. They are just babies and should probably have some years in your cellar, though it’s hard to resist such bold and powerful wines. You could decant them if you just can’t wait, and give them time to open up. Either way, you should have some in your collection!

The Quinta do Noval name first appeared in land registries in 1715. In 1894 the estate was acquired by António José da Silva, a port shipper from Porto, after its devastation by phylloxera. He restored the property by replanting the vines. The winery made its name with the declaration of the 1931 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port, and the 1931 Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port. Because of the global depression and the enormous production and shipment of the 1927 Vintage, most shippers did not declare the 1931. This success established Quinta do Noval among the great names of Vintage Port in the English and American markets. A new bottling line and warehouse was completed in 1997 in Alijo, near Pinhão. This project made Quinta do Noval the first of the traditional Port shippers to centralize all its activities in the Douro Valley. Quinta do Noval is the only historic Port Shipper that bears the name of its vineyard.

This is well-packed, offering the vivid plum, boysenberry, cassis and açaí berry fruit profile of the vintage, along with a dark edge of tar, baker’s chocolate and salted licorice that courses underneath. The long finish lets the fruit play out, keeping singed alder and chai spice hints in the background. Smolderingly seductive. Best from 2035 through 2060. An exceptionally early harvest followed on from a cold, dry winter and a very hot, dry summer from June onwards. Deep, opaque and still youthful in appearance; opening up in the glass to reveal super-ripe, minty fruit with a touch of dust and eucalypt. Already showing wonderful finesse; big, broad and fleshy with solid, ripe tannins rising in the mouth to a long and massively structured (foursquare) finish. Beautifully defined and integrated overall. Very impressive: this will be a long-term keeper.
