As you might know, or perhaps not, Grand Vin is located up in the Pacific Northwest just outside of Olympia, Washington. So, we often take great joy to highlight some of our PNW neighbors in the wine world. There are so many great producers from just a few hours east of us, with Columbia Valley, Walla Walla, Yakima Valley, Red Mountain and the like. Not to mention our friends a few hours South in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. One of these great bottles we just found is from Upchurch Vineyard.

About a four-hour drive south and east of us, Upchurch Vineyard is an 18.5-acre site uniquely situated on a small plateau at the southern tip of the Red Mountain AVA in Washington State. Established in 2007, Upchurch Vineyard is owned and operated by Winemaker Chris Upchurch and his wife, Thea Upchurch. Chris has been and continues to be the Founding Winemaker and Partner at DeLille Cellars. From its inception, the vineyard has been sustainably farmed and certified by L.I.V.E.  It is also certified “salmon safe” to protect our watersheds.

This “undeniably elegant” wine from Upchurch Vineyard is now in stock!

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Upchurch Vineyard is mostly clone 2 with clone 198. Blended with 9% Merlot, the wine opens to a fresh and opulent nose with a juicy frame that offers a dynamic, pure and focused expression with layers of complexity, healthy fruit and ripe oak tones that sing harmoniously in unison. Full-bodied, the palate is fresh, balanced and succulently ripe, with a balanced structure, juicy acidity and fine-grained tannins, offering tremendous pleasure and a food-friendly finish. Give it time. This might be the best vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon Upchurch Vineyard that I have tasted. The wine aged for 20 months in 90% new French oak barrels. Only 6,300 bottles were produced of this pure, layered and complex Cabernet.—Anthiny Mueller, The Wine Advocate

Hauntingly dark and intense, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Upchurch Vineyard, from the estate Upchurch Vineyard, smolders up with a whiff of sweet berries that evolves into a blend of dusty sage, mint and just a hint of tangerine. This is undeniably elegant—nearly creamy in feel— yet lively and fresh, with vividly ripe blueberry and cherry tones complicated by a mineral tinge toward the close. It finishes long and dramatic, leaving sweet violet pastille and chalky tannins that further enhance the experience. The 2020 leaves the mouth watering for more. What a darling, and a total outlier in the 2020 vintage. This shows lovely balance for a long evolution. -- Eric Guido. Vinous Media

Instantly impressive, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Feather opens to silky, fresh and fleshy dark red and black fruit tones with picturesque rich and ripe notions that sashay out of the glass with elegance, power and precision. Medium to full-bodied, the Cabernet shows incredible depth and breadth with succulent acidity and fine-grained tannins. This will have no trouble aging past its 20th birthday. World-class and devastatingly beautiful, the wine continues to somersault across the ever-evolving finish, and it will undoubtedly be well received upon its release in the fall later this year. Mark your calendar now, and run, don’t walk to add this to your cellar. Just under 48,000 bottles were filled after the wine rested for 22 months in all French oak, 90% first fill.—Anothony Mueller, The Wine Advocate
