#5 James Suckling Top 100 France 2022
#12 James Suckling's Top 100 2022
The 2020 Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain offers a fascinating, pure and complex, iodine and smoky nose of crushed volcanic rocks and perfectly ripe Riesling fruits. This nose is mind-blowing in its combination of purity, complexity, finesse and characterizing flintiness. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, very rich and intense, powerful and big but uplifting and fresh Riesling with great complexity, stimulating salinity and very fine mineral tannins. This is the finest Rangen Riesling I have tasted so far from the Clos St Urbain, and a vertical tasting (of any vintages) is long overdue. 13.6% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2022. - Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

Be prepared to be amazed! Staggering nose of ripe pineapple, Amalfi lemon, honeysuckle and mystery. Enormously powerful and concentrated with breathtaking drive, this heads off into space like a star ship. Such razor-sharp mineral acidity, yet also staggering, textural complexity at the incredibly long finish with its cornucopia of citrusy aromas. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.--James Suckling
The 2020 Riesling Brand is from vines planted in the 1950s (predominantly), 1970s and 1920s. Deep, pure, intense and flinty on the complex and refreshing mineral nose that also reveals perfectly ripe (tropical) fruit aromas (mango, passion fruit), this is a powerful, rich and saline Riesling with great intensity, power and compact but fine tannins. The finish is long, intense and salivating, but the aging potential is even greater. 13.7% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2022. - Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

Very smoky and flinty with lychee, papaya and star-fruit aromas. A very concentrated and super-silky gewurz that has none of the massiveness or bitterness towards which the wines of this grape so easily tend. And that in spite of more than 15% alcohol! Indeed, the freshness on the finish reminds me of the best 2016 gewurz, though here it is married to greater ripeness. Wonderfully silky, long finish. Fermented until November 2021. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.--James Suckling
The golden-colored 2020 Gewurztraminer Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain opens with ripe pear, dark chocolate, coriander and flinty aromas. On the palate, this is a rich, fresh, lively, piquant and grapefruit-bitter Gewürztraminer with fine tannins and long salinity. The finish is very long and still somewhat bitter, but this is a great, powerful and age-worthy Gewürz. Bottled with 15.6% de facto alcohol and 2.5 grams per liter of residual sugar. Tasted at the domaine in April 2022. - Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

A lot of riesling freaks say the grape needs stony soils, but here’s a beautiful example of how well it can do on clay-rich soil. So much citrus and peach here, even though there’s still a touch of youthful leeriness. Rich and powerful, it also has a very firm core behind the breathtaking succulence. Already great integration of concentration, fine tannins and bright acidity through the very long and complete finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.--James Suckling

This gewurz is built on a monumental scale with gigantic concentration and structure, easily filling out the huge body. The abundant fine tannins soak up almost all of the unfermented grape sweetness and drive the very long and texturally complex, spicy finish. Already pretty mind-blowing, but great aging potential! From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2025..--James Suckling

Very fragrant nose of yellow and pink roses with plenty of turkish delight. Very concentrated, but the fine tannins and excellent freshness (in spite of modest acidity) give this a wonderful balance, which makes this frankly off-dry gewurz hard to resist. And the turkish-delight finish is also something else! From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.--James Suckling

Super smoky, spicy and flinty, this imposing and enveloping pinot gris is barely off-dry. Welcome to a world of smoky and textural complexity on the deep and refined palate. The power and concentration are almost as complete as the ripeness, effortlessly handling the 13.5% alcohol. Super-long, creamy and spicy finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. A game-changing dry pinot gris that manages to get all the floral-honey character and creaminess that fans of this category adore into a self-confidently dry package. In spite of the wine’s imposing stature, it only weighs in at 13% alcohol and this gives it a lightness of touch that the pink-grapefruit aroma at the super-elegant finish only accentuates. The first dry pinot gris from this site, which has similar soil to the famous Grand Cru Schoenenbourg. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.--James Suckling

This smells of the ripest melon you can imagine. Fresh herbal notes, including a touch of mint. Super-elegant and bright with a very sensual, silky texture on the generous palate. The stunning concentration masks the high acidity that drives the very long and chalky finish. With this much vitality it surely has enormous aging potential. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.--James Suckling
