A classic vintage and a “refined and gracious” wine from one of the founding estates of the appellation.

Sangiovese, the signature grape of Italy, is a wild and adaptable grape, with over hundreds of different clones. The version that was given the name Brunello (which means “the brown one”) has thicker skins, which gives more structure and depth to the wines. The hilltop town of Montalcino is ringed by vineyards and estates dating back to the Middle Ages.

The Costanti family’s estate dates back to the fifteenth century, a noble family of Sienna. And while wine growing in the area dates back even farther, to the time of the Etruscans, the earliest record of a wine of quality from the Costanti estate is a bottle from 1865 shown at an exhibition in 1870.

With a history stretching back to the mid-16th century, Conti Costanti is one of the founding estates of the Brunello di Montalcino denomination, run by Andrea Costanti since 1983. He follows up his gorgeously seductive 2015 with a stunningly refined and gracious 2016. Savoury earthy notes are accompanied by nuanced dried florals, citrus peel and pure red berries. It reaches profound depths on the palate where compact, ripe and dusty tannins promise a long cellaring life. It's so seamlessly put together that it's almost a shame to try teasing it apart.
