In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill’s birth this year, Maison Pol Roger has unveiled a statue in his honor. Churchill was a lifelong fan of Pol Roger, having first purchased from the House in 1908, the year of his marriage to Clementine. He never visited 44 Avenue de Champagne, the former home of Jacques and Odette Pol Roger in Epernay, but declared it as “The most drinkable address in the world.” Paul Rafferty’s statue, unveiled at a ceremony in late June, places Churchill right there, 30 meters above the famous Pol Roger cellars which hold the champagne that was so close to his heart.

This fine Champagne House was started in 1849 by Pol Roger, at the age of only eighteen. By 1855 he was already producing mostly Brut Champagne, a drier style that he knew was the type of Champagne which the English preferred. This close relationship with England has remained strong ever since, and Pol Roger is perhaps best known as Winston Churchill's favorite Champagne. The house remains family owned and has a reputation for producing Champagnes of finesse and elegance which age very well. They are one of the few Grandes Marques to own a high percentage of their own vineyards.

The Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill was devised ten years after the former Prime Minister’s death. Mindful of the qualities he sought in his champagne, Pol Roger’s prestige cuvée is crafted to a robust, full bodied, Pinot dominant style. Made to a secret cépage exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards that were under vine during his lifetime, this wine is only made in the finest of vintage years and left to mature in the deepest Pol Roger cellars.

There is a wonderful biscuity aroma to this Pinot Noir-dominated Champagne. Named after the British war-time prime minister and an avid consumer of Champagne, the wine is mature, full of ripe yeasty flavors and concentration. Very complex nose with a wide spectrum of candied citrus, dried peach and mirabelle tart aromas. Bold and rich, particularly on the mid-palate, but with a great deal of subtlety and delicacy for the vintage. This is already delicious, but at the finish you really taste how this has been made for the long term. Great drive and persistence right at the end. Drink or hold. - James Suckling

The 2015 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill shows off the savory side of the vintage to great effect. Hints of dried pear, sage, mint, dried flowers, lemon oil and chamomile open gradually in this mid-weight, lithe edition of Pol Roger's tête de cuvée. The 2015 unfolds nicely with time in the glass, but I wouldn't think of opening a bottle anytime soon. Readers will find a nervy Winston Churchill marked by notable freshness and vigor more than size. This is a fine effort in a vintage that has proven to be far trickier than most observers originally envisioned. Dosage is 7 grams per liter.
