“Giodo is first and foremost a story of Sangiovese, my first great love. A tribute to my parents, Giovanna and Donatello, to whom I owe everything." - Carlo Ferrini

Carlo Ferrini is one of the best-known winemakers in Italy. For over 30 years he has worked in wine throughout the country, from Trentino to Sicily, where among the many wines he creates come some of the most famous labels in the country. In 2002 he purchased the first plot of land in Montalcino and thus began a new challenge, an adventure, but above all it was the culmination of a passion.

Passing on the secrets of the vineyard and the wise gestures of the cellar from generation to generation is one of the aspirations of every wine producer. The same is true for Carlo Ferrini. Heir to his passion is his daughter Bianca. Just over thirty years old, with a past as a water polo player and training in agriculture in Italy and marketing in the United States, today she faces Giodo's daily challenges.

It was on Sicily’s Mount Etna that the irresistible charm of the volcano made Carlo Ferrini fall in love. The two expressions of Alberelli di Giodo (“the Saplings of Giodo”) were born in small plots, which, added together, amount to around two hectares. The precious Nerello Mascalese and Carricante vines thrive between 560 and 850 meters above sea level. They are mainly raised as saplings and coexist with olive and fruit trees. The altitude and the ideal northern exposure allow us to obtain wines with a unique structure and fruit while the minerality derives from the black pumice soil of the volcano.

We are pleased to offer the latest releases from Podere Giodo, a stunning Brunello di Montalcino, the Rosso Toscana “La Quinta,” and the exciting rosso and bianco Alberelli di Giodo from Sicily.

#33 James Suckling Top 100 Wines of 2023

Aromas of cedar, earth, tree bark, fruit tea, black tea and cherries. Then it turns to fresh and dried flowers. Medium to full body as it grows on the palate with superb fine tannins that run the length of the wine. It’s structured and powerful with great length. The acid, tannin balance is incredible. Very clear and transparent. What a wine. Drinkable but better in three or four years.-James Suckling

Made from 100% Sangiovese, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is medium garnet-purple in color. It soars from the glass with classic notions of dried cherries, tobacco leaf, and ripe redcurrants, followed by wafts of wild sage and crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate shimmers with energetic red berry and mineral-inspired flavors with a racy backbone and grainy tannins, finishing with a real skip in its step.-Lisa Perrotti-Brown,The Wine Independent

Lively red fruits of strawberries, red cherries, and violets followed by a mix of spices and fresh herbs. Medium-bodied, with fine and sophisticated tannins with delightful acidity. Elegant and artful wine with beautiful purity and complexity. Already fascinating now but it will go further as it ages. Try after 2027.-James Suckling

So fragrant on the nose, wild white flowers mixed with dried herbs and aromatic peaches and lychees. Crisp yet round, a lovely burst of citrus juiciness on the palate with high acidity that zings and then settles revealing more creamy white peach and pear with subtle wet stone saltiness and herbal spice around the edges. Feels like a serious, gourmet wine, with body, structure and yet lots of life. Ends mineral and salty, I love it, with a flash of heat and southern Italy spice about it. 100% Carricante vines, averaging 50 years in age, planted between 800-900 in altitude. Ageing six months in steel tanks on the lees and 10 months in bottle before release.-Georgina Hindle, Decanter

This is pure carricante with honeysuckle, lemons, and light grapefruit with a salty sense to the aromas. The same character comes through on the palate with a medium to full body, creamy texture and pretty finish. Lemongrass and mineral highlight the subtle fruit flavors and acidity. Tangy. Clean and clear nature to this. Drink now.-James Suckling

2021 Giodo Alberelli di Giodo Rosso

$49.89 (750ml) Pre-Arrival- Buy Now

Aromas of plum, iron and pumice with some flowers. It’s medium-bodied with powdered, fine tannins. It’s layered and elegant yet so structured. Very long and focused. Wild finish with a lava-like undertone to it all. Just above the contrada of Rapante. Drinkable but better in two or three years.-James Suckling

The single-varietal 2021 Nerello Mascalese is pale garnet-purple in color. It springs forth with notes of fresh redcurrants and raspberries, leading to hints of graphite, lavender, and sauteed herbs. The medium to full-bodied palate offers chewy tannins and a racy backbone to support the vibrant red berry and herbal flavors, finishing with a pleasant grippiness.-Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent
