Rita Tua and her husband Virgilio began making one of the first â€œvins de garageâ€ back in 1984 with just two hectares of vines in Suvereto on the Tuscan Coast. They were about 40km south of Bolgheri, and 70km north of Grosseto, in an area largely used for agriculture and livestock. But in spite of their location, they put the winery on the map almost from the start. â€œThe 2000 Redigaffi (a pure expression of Merlot) was the first Italian wine to earn 100 points in the print edition of The Wine Advocate. Robert M. Parker Jr. scored that wine himself.â€ (Wine Advocate)

They came onto the scene when the idea of â€œSuper-Tuscanâ€ was just taking off, and cemented their reputation at exactly the right time. Today, Ritaâ€™s son-in-law, Stefano Frascolla, runs the estate with her daughter Simena, and consulting enologist Luca Dâ€™Attoma is back with them after a few years away. They have expanded to about 55 hectares, but remain one of the top producers in Tuscany for "international" varieties.

The word "Giusto" refers to the name of the Patron Saint of Suvereto (the hilltop Tuscan town where Tua Rita is located) and "Notri" is the name of the winery's exact location.

In a sense, this wine is like the Bosco dei Sugheri but with the addition of one more grape variety in the blend. The Tua Rita 2019 Giusto di Notri is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot. I tasted the wine shortly after it had been bottled. With 40,000 bottles made, it should start hitting the market now. The Giusto di Notri offers lots of dark primary fruit with important structure and texture in this classic vintage. Blackberry and black plum cede to spice, tar and campfire ash. There's nothing not to like in this vintage that far exceeded initial expectations. Sweet berries and spice with dried-chili and walnut undertones. Currants, too. Full-bodied with chewy tannins that are polished and savory. Very sophisticated and structured. Savory. Cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc. Give this time to soften. A beauty this vintage. Try after 2024.-James Suckling
