The Paitin winery in Barbaresco is one of the oldest in the area, established back in 1796. In 1893, the first Barbaresco Sori Paitin was produced and in 1898 the winery began exporting the wine commercially.

In Barbaresco, the other famed cru of Neive (after Santo Stefano) is Serraboella, the jewel of which is the Sori Paitin cru (Sori in Piemontese means the spot of the hill most exposed to sun – where the snow melts first). Neive Barbareschi are typically more powerful than those of the other villages of Barbaresco. In fact, Luca Pasquero-Elia from Paitin describes the Serraboella & Sori Paitin wines as being very similar to the wines of the Montestefano cru in Barbaresco – a cru known for being among the most “Barolo-like”.

The vineyards are certified organic. In the cellar, the winemaking follows a traditional protocol. That includes long macerations (3 to 8 weeks for the Barbareschi) and aging the wines in large, neutral botti, mainly Austrian from the famed cooperage Stockinger. In fact, for those with a long memory, the winery flirted briefly with some modern winemaking techniques in the 1990s, though they didn’t like the results and returned relatively quickly to their classical roots.

"The Pasquero-Elia family has superb vineyards and already knew how to craft delicious wines, but the continued search for excellence and the willingness to invest in the future is what separates the true greats from the merely good and excellent producers.” - Antonio Galloni

Opening to a luminous garnet color, the Paitin 2019 Barbaresco Serraboella Sorì Paitin is delicate and fresh, but the wine is not without its inner power and consistency. It plays its cards carefully, thanks to a slow-moving bouquet characterized by redcurrant and tart cherry. It gains power on the palate with polished tannins and tight structure. Give this bottle a few more years to unwind. Exactly 13,293 numbered bottles were produced.-Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

This red has a mineral streak running through it, with a distinctive graphite note permeating the cherry and raspberry core, plus earth, tobacco and menthol accents that add depth. Plays out on the finish with a taut, linear profile. Best from 2026 through 2045. - BS, Wine Spectator

Intensely spicy aromas recalling sandalwood and star anise join scents of botanical herb, violet and new leather on this fragrant red. The focused palate is still youthfully austere and primary, offering tart pomegranate, orange zest and licorice set against racy acidity and tight, close-grained tannins. Drink 2029–2044. - Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast

Sandalwood and culinary spice aromas mingle with rose leather and camphor. Showing structure and a racy finesse, the vibrant palate is young and loaded with nervous energy at this stage but already delicious, offering juicy Morello cherry, raspberry and star anise framed in taut, refined tannins and bright acidity. Drink 2029–2044. - Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast

With 15,493 bottles produced with fruit selected across this celebrated MGA, the Paitin 2019 Barbaresco Serraboella reaches a perfect pitch between fruit ripeness and acidity. This exacting balance is a hallmark of the vintage. The house style, on the other hand, is focused on elegance, so you really get quite a beautiful drinking experience with this bottle. Red and purple fruits segue to wild rose and red licorice.-Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Paitin is a very traditional estate where the winemaking is focused on submerged-cap maceration of one month and ageing in big Slavonian as well as Austrian oak casks. Bright ruby in the glass, it's slightly funky at first but then focuses on floral touches, super-restrained, with a tight pomegranate character. The attack is crunchy with ripe tannins woven with zesty acidity and a cherry kernel flavour. The remarkable fruit freshness makes this wine stylish and not without ability to age. Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter
