Montepeloso Costa Toscana

Montepeloso lies in the Maremma region of Tuscany, set back from the Tyrrhenian coast and close to the mediaeval town of Suvereto. Val di Cornia, which was awarded DOC status in 1989 followed by the DOCG appellation in 2011, is at a historical meeting point of Roman and Etruscan settlement and culture. The Etruscan settlement of Populonia lies just to the south of the vineyard, overlooking the Gulf of Baratti.

Swiss-born Fabio Chiarelotto has been the guiding hand at the helm of Montepeloso since 1999 along with Silvio Denz of Peby Faugeres and Lalique Crystal whom he partnered with in 2007. Chiarelotto spent years reshaping and rebuilding his 15-acres of vineyards in the hills surrounding the village of Suvereto, near Bolgheri, to varietals that best matched the clay soils, hilly terrain and warm, windy climate. While not entirely eschewing the Bordeaux varietals commonly found in the area, he opted to plant predominately Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Colorino, Alicante Bouschet, Mareselan and Malvasia Nera. Entirely biodynamic and hand-harvested, Eneo comes from 8-20 year old vines with an average production ~2500 cases per year.

A rich and juicy red with plum and chocolate character. Some fresh sage, too. It's full and layered, but remains bright and vivid. Hints of herbs and dark fruit at the end, as well as soil. Drinkable now, but even better in three or four years.-James Suckling

The Montepeloso 2018 Eneo (a blend of 55% Sangiovese, 25% Montepulciano, 15% Alicante and 5% Malvasia Nera) is another unexpected blend from this very promising estate on the Tuscan Coast. With 34,000 bottles made, this is the mid-entry cru wine. It offers a beautifully saturated color with thickness, fruity richness and nicely integrated tannins. It's a bit harder to dissect the various components in this blend, but that solo voice of Sangiovese does emerge with wild plum, potting earth and blue lilac. There is an extra point of acidity that also reminds me of the mighty Tuscan grape. This well-priced wine is worth seeking out. Monica Larner – The Wine Advocate
