Amarone! The “Great Bitter” wine that came about when the sweet Recioto delle Valpolicella was accidentally allowed to ferment all the way dry. It is now considered one of the great wines of Italy, with full DOCG status, and known to age tremendously well. Four months of slow drying the grapes in the fall and winter months leaves a deep and powerful “wine of contemplation” Best enjoyed on a cooler evening, perhaps even while the snow falls, with some nuts, dried fruits and strong cheese, like Gorgonzola or aged Parmegiano-Reggiano, or a simple but robust braised meat. Amarone is a wine to share with friends and family.
The Guerrieri Family has roots in Verona going back to the 17th Century, and the Rizzardi Family, originally from Lombardy, purchased vineyards in the Veneto in the same era. By 1913 the two families were joined, and released their first wine under that label in 1914. Guerrieri-Rizzardi has joined the Historical Wine Families’ Association and the Les Hénokiens Association of 200-year old family businesses.
