Roagna Barolo & Barbaresco

Deep and Pure 2017s from the Roagna Family

Up to 95 points and In Stock - Very Limited

The heart and soul of Roagna are in their vineyards. The Barbarescos are deep, pure and soil-driven wines that offer up fine depth of black fruit, strong signatures of terroir, hints of licorice and fresh herbs and a judicious base of tarriness. On the palate the Barbaresco bottlings are full-bodied and structured, with firm, well-integrated tannins that demand some time in the cellar before drinking. The Barolos are a bit more robust and show some red fruity character to go along with their core of black cherry fruit, anise, autumnal soil tones, tar and woodsmoke. On the palate they too are full-bodied and powerful wines, with fine balances and the potential to easily evolve in the cellar for thirty or more years.

They have a superb track record for longevity. Like many traditional producers, the wines of Roagna improve immeasurably if decanted for a significant period of time prior to drinking, even when the wines have spent a number of years in the cellar.

The estate has a long and successful history, but also seems likely to jump up a notch in quality under the perfectionist regime of 5th generation winemaker Luca Roagna. One day soon the fame of the winery will catch up with the outstanding quality of their wines.

2017 Roagna Barolo La Pira

$169.89 (750ml) In Stock- Buy Now

95 WS / 93 VM

Dense and muscular, with cherry, strawberry, rose, mineral and eucalyptus flavors in the grip of assertive tannins. Despite being lithe and light-bodied, this red finds equilibrium in the end, with the red fruit lingering on the finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 1,009 cases made.-Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

The 2017 Barolo Pira is a powerful, intensely savory wine. Dark cherry, herbs, leather incense and licorice all add to an impression. The Pira Barolo is one of the most reticent wines in this entire collection. It is hard to read today, despite its obvious weight and character.-Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2017 Roagna Barbaresco Albesani

$169.89 (750ml) In Stock- Buy Now

95 WS / 92 VM

This red features excellent balance and complexity, with a supple and delicate texture despite a solid matrix of tannins underneath. Reveals macerated cherry, plum and floral notes accented by licorice and mineral on the long, resonant finish. Best from 2025 through 2042. 256 cases made.-Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

The 2017 Barbaresco Albesani is delicate and ethereal. Crushed flowers, sweet dried cherry, cinnamon and orange zest give this deceptively light-bodied Barbaresco a good deal of both nuance and complexity. All the elements are so nicely balanced. All things considered, the 2017 is an understated wine from this Neive site.- Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2017 Roagna Barbaresco Gallina

$169.89 (750ml) In Stock- Buy Now

94 WS / 92 VM

Both rich and fruity, boasting cherry, strawberry, rose, iron and eucalyptus aromas and flavors. Shows terrific balance and a juiciness that extends the fruit and savory finish. Best from 2024 through 2042. 311 cases made.-Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

The 2017 Barbaresco Gallina is bright, translucent and bristling with energy. Crushed red berry fruit, blood orange, spice, anise, mint and chalk all run through this nervy, mid-weight Barbaresco. In 2017, the Gallina leans towards the more taut end of the spectrum. Sweet kirsch and floral notes add an exotic flourish on the finish.-Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2017 Roagna Barbaresco Paje

$179.89 (750ml) In Stock- Buy Now

94 WS / 92 VM

The 2017 Barbaresco Paje offers up a compelling mélange of sweet red-toned fruit, cinnamon, blood orange, leather, cedar and tobacco. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2017 fleshes out nicely with a bit of time in the glass, showing its natural breadth and creaminess Here, too, there is a good bit of immediacy and overall appeal.-Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2017 Roagna Barbaresco Faset

$174.89 (750ml) In Stock- Buy Now

94 WS / 91 VM

This red shows a supple texture and macerated cherry and strawberry fruit, which initially add up to a lot of pleasure. Yet there is a solid base of tannins too, a promise of this wine's future potential. Comes together on the fresh finish, where an echo of red fruit and emerging mineral elements linger. Best from 2025 through 2042. 220 cases made.-Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

The 2017 Barbaresco Faset is open-knit, gracious and quite pretty. Sweet dried cherry, incense, tobacco, mint and died flowers are all nicely lifted in this attractive, mid weight Barbaresco. Hints of cedar, tobacco, incense and dried flowers add aromatic presence and lift throughout. The Faset is another wine in this range that will drink well with minimal cellaring.-Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
