2020 Leonetti Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon

Up here in the PNW as the rains dig in and bud break is imminent, we toast our wine growers and makers.

The Leonetti Family can trace their roots in the Walla Walla Valley back to the turn of the 20^th Century, and Gary Figgins planted his first vines in 1974. They were the first commercial winery in the valley, and one of the first Washington Wineries to make a name for the state outside the PNW. I remember getting allocations of 6 bottles or less, customers asking for just one more bottle, but it was so hard to find and in such big demand!

We are lucky to have a very small amount of the just-released 2020 Cabernet, and a smattering of bottles from the last few years in our warehouse. I heartily recommend you grab a few bottles for your cellar before they are all gone! Cheers from us, up in the in upper left-hand corner.

The classic 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon from this great estate checks in as 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. Its dense purple/plum color gives way to a gorgeous nose of blackcurrants, burning embers, new leather, graphite, and tobacco. Rich, full-bodied, and concentrated on the palate, it's one heck of a mouthful of Cabernet that brings classic Washington State structure and grip, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. It's going to require 4-6 years, if not upward of a decade to hit maturity, and should evolve for 30 years or more. It's brilliant juice.--Jeb Dunnuck

Another blockbuster effort by Leonetti, their 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of nearly all Cabernet Sauvignon (81%) with a touch of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec added. Aromatically quite hedonistic, this offers instant gratification with suggestions of loganberry cordial, garrigue, wintergreen, anise and scorched earth accents that bring you back to the glass. Once in the mouth this shows plenty of ripe dark fruits and solid flavor density with menthol accents and firm tannins framing everything brilliantly. The long finish adds to the enjoyment as this sinfully good and finesse-driven Cabernet Sauvignon will cellar well for another two decades to come. The 2015 Reserve is a borderline perfect wine. Made from 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Malbec, and 8% Merlot, its vibrant purple color is followed by a gorgeous nose of crème de cassis, graphite, scorched earth, liquid violets, and charcoal. Full-bodied, deep, voluptuously textured and layered, with sweet tannin, this incredible beauty stays pure and elegant on the palate, with perfect balance.
