A rich, powerful, and sometimes meaty red wine, syrah originated in the Rhone Valley, but today we can choose from a wide variety of thrilling examples from all over the world. It is the most planted grape of Australia, where it's known as shiraz, and we have excellent selections from Italy, Washington and California for your consideration as well.

This is a serious and intense syrah. Complex notes of chocolate, blackberries, black cherries, cedar and nutmeg here, with cracked pepper, rosemary and dried lavender. Evolving. Firm, tight and compact, with a full body. Beautiful freshness, too. More structure here. Try from 2025.-James Suckling
Dark and viral in the glass with savory exotic spices, crushed ashen stones, grilled sage and smoked meats, the 2020 Syrah Motor City Kitty (MCK) makes a big first impression. This is texturally deep with a wave of mineral tinged black fruits accelerated by sour citrus, as sweet herbal tones form toward the close. The 2020 tapers off with a potent concentration of wild berries and smoky earth, as gently grippy tannins tug at the palate. There's simply so much going on here, and so much more to come through cellaring.-Eric Guido, Vinous Media
2018 Standish The Standish Shiraz
Barossa Valley, South Australia
98-100 WA / 98 JS / 97 DE
#49 James Suckling's Top 100 Wines of Australia 2020
The 2018 The Standish Shiraz (a sample blend from barrel) is a bit stalky (it's about 50% whole cluster), but it's gorgeously perfumed, with hints of herbal tea, raspberries, blackberries and licorice. It just exudes complexity, while also being full-bodied, plush and creamy, with a long, elegant finish. This seamless beauty is a candidate for perfection.—Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate
2015 Shafer Vineyards Syrah Relentless
Napa Valley, California
95+ WA / 94 WE / 93 VM
Blended of 90% Syrah and 10% Petite Sirah, the deep purple-black colored 2015 Relentless has a total rock-star nose of flamboyant blackberry pie, plum preserves, mulberries and licorice scents with hints of Sichuan pepper, hoisin, Indian spices and smoked meats plus a waft of raspberry leaves. Very big, rich, full and decadently fruited in the mouth, the palate packs in black fruits and exotic spices layers with a firm, rounded tannin frame and just enough freshness to carry off the long, opulent finish. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

2012 Tua Rita Syrah
Tuscany
97 VM / 94 WA
Layers of inky, black fruit, grilled herbs, smoke, menthol and melted road tar are all layered together in the 2012 Syrah. Deep, fleshy and explosive in the glass, the Syrah is endowed with marvelous complexity and depth while remaining remarkably light on its feet for such a big wine. Hints of lavender, violets, leather and blueberry jam inform the finish. In 2012, the Syrah benefits greatly from longer macerations at lower temperatures and an overall gentler approach to extraction. The 2012 Syrah has been nothing short of remarkable on the multiple occasions I have tasted it so far. - Anotonio Galloni, Vinous Media

A superb Maison Bleue, the 2019 Hermitage La Maison Bleue seamlessly blends cherries and cassis into a purple mashup of fruit carried on rich, velvety waves of texture. Full-bodied and intense, it finishes complex and savory, adding notes of olive, clove and cedar on the long, luxurious finish. Already approachable, it should drink well through 2040. --Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate

A balanced nose of predominantly sweet meaty barbecue is topped with overripe plums, black olives, hoisin and black peppercorn that induces one's hunger. The palate is deep and dark, marked by the delicacy of fresh plum, black olives, fresh bacon and rosemary. Unrelentingly enticing, with rolling acidity that washes the palate. — Anna Christina Cabrales, Wine Enthusiast
2020 Rene Rostaing Les Lezardes Syrah
Collines Rhodaniennes, Northern Rhone
90 JD
Moving to the 2020s, this is an incredible vintage for Rostaing. The 2020 Vin De Pays Des Collines Rhodaniennes Les Lezardes comes from the same three parcels every year, and the 2020 has a great nose of juicy raspberry and blackberry-like fruits as well as peppery spice and sandalwood. This elegant, medium-bodied, balanced, character-filled Syrah is best enjoyed over the coming 4-5 years.--Jeb Dunnuck
