Owned by father and daughter team Paul and Laurence Féraud, Domaine du Pégau is one of the great estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The benchmark producer of traditionally-styled Châteauneuf, Pégau is justifiably ranked among the greatest wines in the world.

The Férauds have been growing vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since 1670, with titles to their earliest vineyards dating back to 1733. Paul, the youngest of four children, began working full time for the family business at age 14. The Férauds sold most of their production in bulk to top négociants (Jaboulet-Aine, David & Foillard, Guigal), but in 1964, Paul decided to sell 5,000 bottles under his own label. The era of estate bottling had begun.

The only child of Paul and Odette, Laurence studied business and marketing in Paris, and after various jobs in wines sales, returned to Châteauneuf-du-Pape to help manage the family estate. Laurence was full of ideas, and to differentiate themselves, proposed creating a family domaine with a unique name and label. She and Paul launched Domaine du Pégau in 1987, naming the estate after the terracotta jugs used in the Pope’s summer residence that gave the village its name.

Located 15 minutes north of Avignon, the appellation brings together five villages around Châteauneuf-du-Pape. First appellation recognized in 1936, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is known worldwide for the diversity of its wines.

Terroirs and the “mistral” wines are the two great assets of the appellation, which offers four types of soil: the famous rolled pebbles, sands, limestones and finally red (clay) sandstones. The Domaine du Pegau plots extend over the commune of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Courthézon & Bédarrides. We find the famous terroirs of La Crau West, La Crau East & La Crau South characterized by sands dotted with some pebbles. The wines are distinguished by their power and elegance, by their minerality and their length.

“The Domaine du Pégau uses 13 and more grape varieties, some of which are available in two colors such as Grenache Blanc and Red. Grenache noir is present at about 70% on the terroir of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOP. Grenache will be expressed by its power, its roundness, its warmth and its range of spices. Syrah has a violet scent and its consistency in the mouth. The Mourvèdre with wild and rustic aromas guarantees long aging. The other five red grape varieties are: Cinsault, the real aromatic complement by its delicacy ; Counoise adds a gentel red fruit aroma ; Vaccarèse a juicy color ; Muscardin and the Terret Noir which distinguish Châteauneuf-du-Pape.” (the other 6 grapes are the white varieties used in the Blanc.)

Incredibly complex leather and forest-floor character, as well as great wild-blackberry fruit, make this enormously concentrated and powerful Chateauneuf-du-Pape irresistible. So graceful and silky at the super-long finish. With every swirl of the glass, the aromas expand!-James Suckling

Lavender, bay leaf and purple raspberries stand out on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and elegant. It's perhaps slightly more concentrated, with more tannic grip on the finish and a firmer structure. One for the cellar. Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate

Another wine that showed better this go-round as well is the 2020 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Da Capo, and it's always a good sign when a wine gets better over the course of its élevage. Plenty of ripe black fruits, roasted garrigue, gamey meats, and flowers define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with plenty of mid-palate depth, a focused, more elegant mouthfeel, and building tannins. While I’m not convinced this matches previous vintages, it’s not far off, and certainly time will tell. It's unquestionably a gorgeous Châteauneuf-du-Pape.-Jeb Dunnuck

I was even more impressed by the 2020 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée than the 2019. Boasting crazily complex floral scents, garrigue, raspberries and cherries, this is one incredibly perfumed example of Pegau. Medium to full-bodied, silky, elegant and long, this is quintessential Pegau.- Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate

The 2020 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée, which was tasted from multiple foudres, is solid as well, with the more elegant style of the vintage as well as classic Pégau goodness. Lots of peppery herbs, leather, Provençal spice, and some meaty notes define the bouquet, and it's medium to full-bodied and balanced on the palate, with lots of classic Pégau style and flair.-Jeb Dunnuck

Brimming with forest berries, this has excellent concentration and wonderful freshness for the warm vintage, plus fine tannins and a slew of cocoa-powder and spicy notes at the long, polished finish.-James Suckling
