It's all about the soil! The ancient sea beds that were pushed up to form the hills and valleys of the Langhe have slightly more nutrients in the Barbaresco area, which makes the wine more “feminine”, though it’s hard to say what exactly that means. The thought is that the poorer soils of Barolo tend to make the wines more tannic and structured.

It is said that the difference between Barbaresco and Barolo is all about the soils. But in both places the Nebbiolo grows and reflects the vineyard sites, and I would argue that Barbaresco can be just as powerful as Barolo - it’s all a matter of location.

La Ca’ Nova (technically “La Ca’ Nova di Rocca”, or “the new house of the Rocca Family”) has been producing two of the finest Crus in Barbaresco for many years, and they are amazing wines at truly amazing prices. We were lucky to grab a few remaining bottles. These wines definitely belong in your cellar!

2019 Ca’ Nova Barbaresco Montestefano

$48.89 (750ml) In Stock- Buy Now

97 VM / 97 WE

The 2019 Barbaresco Montestefano is broad, ample and expansive, as Barbarescos from this site tend to be. Dark cherry fruit, spice, leather, incense and pipe tobacco are some of the notes that open in the glass, but more than anything, the Montestefano impresses with its textural resonance. This huge, explosive  barbaresco will benefit from cellaring, although its pedigree is evident, even in the early going.-Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

Classic varietal aromas of violet, forest floor and camphor come to the forefront along with spicy notes on this gorgeous red. Savory and structured, the delicious palate shows raspberry compote, juicy Morello cherry and baking spice alongside taut, refined tannins and fresh acidity. A licorice note lingers on the close along with hints of truffle. Drink 2027–2039.-Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast

The 2019 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina races out of the glass. Chalk, white pepper, crushed rose petal, cinnamon and salt abound For readers who want to understand what Montefico is all about, well, this is it. Over the last year, the Montefico has started to flesh out a bit. Perhaps one day it will catch the Montestefano. For now, the Montefico is a Barbaresco to admire for its vibrant, mineral-drenched personality.-Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

Aromas of violet and prune emerge from the glass along with new leather and forest floor. The full-bodied palate is still young but already offers cherry marinated in spirits, baked plum, vanilla, game and licorice set against a backbone of noble tannins and fresh acidity. Drink after 2029.-Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast
