The Rhône continues to offer value despite rising prices. Unlike much of France, winter and early spring in 2021 for much of the Rhône was relatively dry, although temperatures were still very mild. In fact, the first few weeks of spring saw unusual highs which naturally prompted vine growth.

The resulting wines were, despite the difficulties of the growing season, surprisingly good. In general, both the reds and whites have been described as sophisticated with good structure and acidity and although alcohol was lower than in other years, there was still enough to give body. Like the alcohol, the fruit character was less intense than in previous years but what was there was fresh, clear and pretty.

Bright citrus, honeyed lychee, and tangerine notes emerge from Yves' 2021 Condrieu Les Chaillets, a medium-bodied, beautifully textured, balanced Condrieu. It's tight and slightly closed aromatically, yet it really shines on the palate with its purity, balance, and length.-Jeb Dunnuck

Mealy, apricot-kernel nose. Lovely, salty note on the attack with lovely freshness and vivacity. Excellent concentration and structure with a lovely density as well. Very appealing. - Alistair Cooper MW, Jancis Robinson

The 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc might be one of the best examples of this white that' I've tasted. Incredible pear, white flowers, salty minerality, and hints of ripe citrus define the bouquet, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, has remarkable purity, flawless balance, and a great finish. A blend of Clairette, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, and Bourboulenc that's brought up mostly in foudre (there's a small part in demi-muids and barrel), it deserves 2-3 years in the cellar and will have two decades or more of overall longevity. - Jeb Dunnuck

2021 Domaine de La Solitude CdP Le Vin de La Solitude
98 DE / 97 JD
$93.89 / 750ml (In Stock) Buy Now

The 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Le Vin De La Solitude Blanc is a unique blend of 30% Clairette, 20% Roussanne, 20% Grenache Blanc, and 10% each Bourboulenc, Picpoul Blanc, and Clairette Rosé. Its medium gold hue is followed by an exotic bouquet of honeyed stone fruits, quince, flowers, brioche, and crushed stone. Rich, medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and textured, it's a brilliant, seamless, powerful white that does everything right. I followed this bottle for multiple days, and it only got better with air. I would drink bottles over the coming 5-7 years, but I suspect it will have an interesting evolution well beyond that.-Jeb Dunnuck
