"Château Angélus CEO and co-owner Stephanie de Boüard-Rivoal explained to me during our tasting last week that it has long been the practice of her father, Hubert de Boüard, to put aside a little of their old-vine Cabernet Franc, vinifying and bottling it separately so that they could better understand its potential and contribution.

'These vines from this section of Cabernet Franc are 60-80 years old. Some were planted by my grandfather. So, they have very deep roots.'

The parcel used to make this 100% Cabernet Franc label is located in a small, southwestern portion of the estate that has been dedicated to Cabernet Franc at Angélus for two centuries.

Much of Château Angélus’s signature style today is rooted in romance. Stephanie de Boüard-Rivoal’s grandmother’s maiden name was Elisabeth Bouchet. Bouchet is the traditional Saint-Émilion term for Cabernet Franc. To pay tribute to his wife, Stephanie’s grandfather, Jacques de Boüard de Laforest, chose to focus heavily on Cabernet Franc at the estate, a decision that had a lot to do with love. Now Cabernet Franc accounts for 47% of the plantings at Angélus, including a large portion of the old vines planted by Jacques.

'Hommage à Elisabeth Bouchet won’t necessarily be made every year,' said Stephanie. '2016, 2018 and 2019 have been made. There is no 2017 because of the frost. This label will only be made when this section of Cabernet Franc is exceptional.'" - Lisa Perotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

Produced from 100% old vine, Cabernet Franc, the aromas of smoked roses is what you initially notice before finding tobacco leaf, cherries, black raspberries, mint, menthol, and cigar box scents. The wine offers striking purity, similar to eating the berries off the vine. On the palate, the wine is supple, fresh, elegant, and refined, with silky textures, finesse, and depth. The red fruits continue expanding, taking on additional notes of herbs, tobacco, and cigar wrappers in the long, seamless finish. This is a benchmark wine for Cabernet Franc. 80% of the wine is aged in new, French oak barrels, with the remaining 20% aging in foudres. Only 5 barrels were produced. Each bottle is packaged in its own, numbered box. 14.5% ABV, 3.7 pH. Drink from 2030-2055. - Jeff Leve, Wine Cellar Insider

Only the second release of this cuvée (it was first produced in 2016 and will be produced in 2019 as well), the 2018 Château Angelus Hommage A Elisabeth Bouchet is 100% Cabernet Franc coming from a single parcel of vines averaging between 60-80 years in age. It was vinified in stainless steel and the aging spanned 18 months in new French oak. It's another magical wine from this château that somehow manages to marry serious power and richness with a sense of purity and elegance, as well as complexity, that's something to behold. Deep purple-hued, it offers a sensational array of blackcurrant and cassis fruits intermixed with truffle, spring flowers, and a subtle meaty, baking spice character that develops with time in the glass. Full-bodied on the palate, it's flawlessly balanced, has ultra-fine tannins, and an expansive, seamless, heavenly mouthfeel. Everything is in the right place, and it has perfectly integrated oak along with a gorgeous finish. There are just 849 bottles produced, with a few larger formats, so I expect this to be just about impossible to find in the marketplace (nor will it be cheap), but it's as fine a Saint-Emilion as has ever been made. It needs a decade of cellaring, and I suspect it will have 40-50 years of overall longevity. - Jeb Dunnuck

Based on a final blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Château Angélus is knockout stuff, and while I'm not sure it matches the perfect 2018, it's not far off. Gorgeous notes of redcurrants, blueberries, sandalwood, dried flowers, vanilla, and forest floor are just some of its nuances, and it hits the palate with medium to full body, a perfectly balanced, seamless mouthfeel, beautifully ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. It doesn't have the sheer weight or richness of, say, the 1998, 2000, 2005, or even the 2009, but it doesn't lack for intensity or power, and it’s just a beautiful example of modern-day Saint-Emilion. It's already approachable (this was best on day two) yet will keep for another 30+ years. - Jeb Dunnuck

Beautifully expressive nose, really so welcoming with hints of sweet red cherries, raspberries, milk chocolate and touches of perfume too - soft but really defined. On the palate there is such charming grip from the tannins and flavour that just takes hold straight away but not in an overly dominating way. It's smooth but precise, driven from start to finish. Softly chewy tannins coat the tongue with black fruit and some creaminess alongside excellent acidity that gives a mouthwateringly fresh and cooling aspect underneath the ripe red and black fruit flavours. This has real life and energy, bright with clear complexity and layers of fruit, oak and terroir that comes across as a spicy but also wet stone, mineral undertone. Seriously good. You almost want to drink this now and just capture all the elements going on but they'll continue to soften and integrate over time and also let the beautiful Cabernet Franc elements integrate and come more into play over time. A success in 2019. - GH, Decanter
