Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux Tasting

We were lucky enough to have the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2020 tasting event in our area yesterday. Not every wine that is on the tour was there, as they had two groups hitting different cities at the same time. But there were some gems from the vintage that we already have on order from France, scheduled to be put on the next container to get to us.

2020 is another great vintage, with many of the top wines scoring near perfect just from the barrel. Of course, they never have those for me to taste, but there were certainly some amazing bottles!

A few of the highlights:

2020 Domaine De Chevalier Blanc (Pessac Leognan)

Starting with a white, I could sit and enjoy the Domaine de Chevalier Blanc all day long.  So linear and chalky to start, but with a ripe and round minerally finish. I wrote the words “chalky” and “fresh” in my notes twice, so that must mean something!

2020 Brane Cantenac (Margaux)

Unfortunately this wasn't available at our tasting, but one of our customers attended the recent New York event and raved about the Brane Cantenac. It was a standout bottle in a room full of standouts!

From the Right Bank:

2020 Villemaurine (St Emilion)

I have a serious thing for the right bank. So, I was happily diving into the Saint Emilion and Pomerol tables. Hard to pick but I really was impressed with the Chateau Villemaurine from Saint Emilion, it was so full of dusty fruit, but with great elegance and lift. 

2020 Gazin (Pomerol)

And the Chateau Gazin from Pomerol was stunning, and so well textured and generous. The finish went on and on and made me I wish I had more time with it, and with all those wines.

Saint Julien

And then there was the table of wines of Saint Julien. We all agreed it was a table that was hard to walk away from. A run of amazing bottles that just clearly illustrated the quality of the vintage and the beauty of Bordeaux. From the special label on the Leoville Poyferre celebrating their 100^th vintage for the owners, to their neighbors who will be celebrating 200 and 300 years soon, it was quite a lineup. I think you will like these as much as we did!
