Prior to the release of the 2005 vintage, the property was known as Domaine René Monnier (Xavier's grandfather). In 2005, along with improvements in the vineyard and cellar, Xavier began bottling his wines under his own label. 2016, of course, was an excellent vintage and this wine weighs in at a very modest 12.4% alcohol.

Clos des Chênes is the largest premier cru in Volnay and sits between the premier cru of Taille Pieds and the border of Monthelie. The soil at Clos des Chênes contains a high percentage of limestone and gives a wine of perfume and finesse with an extra generosity of fruit.

Intense aromas of black cherry, pomegranate and tamarind mark this juicy red. Smooth, with well-integrated tannins lending a dusty feel as the finish plays out. Already harmonious, this should develop well over the next two decades. Best from 2022 through 2036. 375 cases made, 175 cases imported. â BS, Wine Spectator
The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, half from vines planted in 1936 and the other half from vines planted in 1978, has a very floral and expressive bouquet with blueberry, cassis and violet aromas. This is quite powerful but it has a little more delineation than the other reds. The palate is medium-bodied with a dab of licorice on the entry, firm but fine tannins and a pleasing edginess toward the sustained finish. Excellent. Drink 2020-2032. âNeal Martin, The Wine Advocate

The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru les Aigrots has a sensual bouquet with Morello cherry, crushed strawberry and light mineral notes that are very well defined. The palate is defined by a frame of chalky tannin housing tensile red berry fruit with just the perfect amount of salinité that will have you craving another sip. This is simply superb. A whiff of the sauvage adds breadth to the red and dark cherry-infused aromas that are trimmed in a background note of wood toast. There is a lovely sense of energy and delineation to the focused and sappy medium-bodied flavors that deliver first-rate length on the overtly austere and moderately rustic finish. This is very Nuits in style and is going to require extended cellaring to soften the firm tannins but it should more than repay your patience. Sweet Spot â Outstanding . Allen Meadows - Burghound
2016 Hubert Lignier Morey St Denis le Blanchards 1er Cru
90-92 WA
$79.89/bottle (In Stock) Buy Now
The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Blanchards was completely destemmed and matured in 342-liter barrels. It has a very composed bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, cranberry leaf and tobacco aromas all neatly intertwined. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe redcurrant and cranberry fruit on the entry, quite saline in the mouth that really get that saliva flowing toward the finish. Give this 3 or 4 years in bottle. At the moment it is not quite as expressive as Cyprien Arlaud's Les Blanchards, although it is not far off. Neal Martin - The Wine Advocate
