It’s the “dog days” of Summer. (From the Roman “days of the dog star,” the end of July and into August when it is the hottest). And this heat will stick around for a while, and then we get the less warm days and cooler nights that come with the joys of the harvest season!

I found a bunch of really lovely white wines under $40 per bottle that we have in stock. Wines great for a backyard BBQ or a bountiful fall feast.

2019 Carbonnieux Blanc

A great Carbonnieux, with careful balance of juicy, salt-edged minerality and creamy nectarine and apricot fruits. 2020 Vieille Julienne Lieu-Dit Clavin Blanc

(Cotes du Rhone)

Based largely on Marsanne, with some Viognier as well, the 2020 Côtes Du Rhône Clavin Blanc comes from vines around the estate, just across the road from Châteauneuf du Pape. White peach, tangerine, and spice notes give way to a medium-bodied, clean, balanced white that brings solid richness and depth while staying fresh and lively.—Jeb Dunnuck

2022 Antinori Vermentino Guado al Tasso

(Tuscany)

The Vermentino of Tenuta Guado al Tasso has a straw yellow color with greenish reflections. The nose is intense and characterized by hints of citrus, white flowers and tropical fruit. On the palate it is sapid and of good persistence, with a fresh and pleasantly citrusy finish. Although yields were lower in 2022, the wine benefits from the cooler coastal breezes. It has been produced since 1996.

2020 El Enemigo Semillon

(Mendoza)

The 2020 Semillon El Enemigo from Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo hails from a 70-year-old vineyard. Aged with flor for a year before 15 months in barrels, it’s a golden yellow in the glass. On the nose there are notes of flint, honey, a little hazelnut and cashew nut underneath the flor-based aromas of white flowers and pear. In the mouth, however, it’s broad with a good, voluminous flow and a clove backdrop. Intense and creamy with a sustained layer of salinity, the stylistic acrobatics have opened up new possibilities for the varietal. -- Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous Media
