Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2014 was a perfect wine with my dinner at a French Restaurant last week, and we have lots of vintages and bottle sizes to choose from!

Grand-Puy-Lacoste

A perfect Pauillac pairing for a fine French meal

Up to 98 points, many vintages and formats!

I had the occasion to enjoy a date night meal in Seattle at a lovely French restaurant in the historic Pike Place Market called Maximilien. Normally crazy busy in the crush of summer tourists, but on a very rainy January night it was cozy and we had a fantastic meal. I had grabbed one of the remaining bottles of 2014 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, which turned out to be a perfect pairing with our steak frites and cassoulet. Sometimes things just come together right!

The name Grand-Puy was already mentioned in documents from the Middle Ages, and it comes from the ancient term "puy” which means "hillock, small height”. True to its name, the vineyard sits on outcrops with a terroir similar to that of the Médoc's first growths. Though classified in 1855 as a 5th growth, many, like Hugh Johnson, agree it deserves a higher ranking. Owner François-Xavier Borie grew up at Ducru-Beaucaillou, and in 1978 his father acquired Grand-Puy-Lacoste and put him in charge of the estate.

Grand-Puy-Lacoste is in Pauillac and the estate is comprised of 90 hectares - 58 planted with vines - that are entirely located around the Château. Since its acquisition by the Borie family in 1978, the vineyards at Grand-Puy-Lacoste have been patiently replanted. Today the balance between young and old vines is fully established at an average age of 38 years. The domain is planted with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon is the ideal noble grape variety, forming the backbone of Grand-Puy-Lacoste's wines.

The 2014 Grand Puy Lacoste is superb. Dark, dense and inviting, the 2014 possesses remarkable depth and richness. Black cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and tobacco all develop in the glass, but it is the overall feel that is most impressive. Silky, polished tannins nicely balance the wine's overt personality. In short, the 2014 has it all. Don't miss it. This is a knockout wine from proprietor François-Xavier Borie. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

The 2018 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is fabulous, just as it was from barrel. Strong Cabernet inflections soar out of the glass, giving the wine a compelling aromatic profile laced with the essence of graphite, dried herbs, menthol and dark fruit. One of the most classic (for lack of a better word) wines in the Left Bank in 2018, Grand-Puy-Lacoste is super-impressive right out of the gate. Grand-Puy-Lacoste is ultimately a wine of tremendous class that remains restrained and aristocratic in breeding. Don't miss it.- Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
