The history of Bolgheri can be traced back to the Etruscans who, long before the Greeks came to Italy, or before Rome itself, were growing grapes on the hills facing the sea. The lower parts of the area were sandy and swampy, but these hills were littered with stones and gravel (great for Cabernet) and clay (great for Merlot). But the wines didn’t get any recognition beyond being shared with friends until a blind tasting of the 1972 Sassicaia, which beat out competitors from Bordeaux. And by the 1980s the wines of Bolgheri had gained international attention for greatness.
And, as with all great wine regions, those great wines often have become a little more expensive. So when reading through the new Jeb Dunnuck article by Audrey Frick, I was looking for some opportunities to find some new wines among the familiar names like Grattamacco, Ornellaia, Sassicaia, Guado al Tasso, Masseto and others. I found a great little property called I Greppi, located a couple of km down the hill from Grattamacco, and their Cabernet, Merlot, and Cab Franc blend called Greppicaia.
The I Greppi estate was acquired in by Irish Geologist Dr. Neil McMahon and family in 2017 from founder Alessandro Landini who planted the first vineyards in 2001. The estate counts 14 hectares of Bolgheri DOC vineyards mostly located around the small Greppi Cupi lakes the help provide biodiversity, and help with the heat on those hot Tuscan summer days. (Those are the lakes you see depicted on the label).
