I Greppi Greppicaia 2020 (750ML)

Raised for 18 months in French barriques, the 2020 Greppicaia is an opaque red with a tinge of purple and offers an opulent bouquet of toasted vanilla bean, black plum, lavender oil, and cedar. Full-bodied, it’s another powerfully structured wine, with ripe tannins and a long and lasting finish. A more Mediterranean sensibility comes through on the finish with notes of black olive, and it also develops an umami-like richness that I think this wine will lean into with age, moving into notes of shitake. Full of plum, blackberry and black currant flavors, this succulent red is balanced and supple in texture. Leather, earth and tobacco flavors add depth as this stays long and bright on the finish. Blackcurrants and black berries with some red and black licorice as well as violets. Medium to full body. Firm and chewy tannins with pretty focus and brightness. Vertical finish. Needs two or three years to come together but already attractive. Drink after 2024.-James Suckling

The winemaking style at I Greppi aims to be very precise, with meticulous attention to fruit and cleanliness. The estate is working with a geologist to analyse the soils and understand how they inform the wines. The 2020 is still crimson in colour, with a cola aroma allied to overt cassis fruit concentration and savoury black olive depth. Firm, oaky tannins, still very young, are allied to fierce acidity which is not fully integrated at the moment. It's not a bold style but it deserves time to improve integration and complexity.-Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter
